Growth of Streaming

Online Streaming Sites

Online streaming sites have become a popular way of modern life, giving access to 1,000s of movies, TV shows and box sets. There are many subscription streaming sites that young people are able to access and view on their device of preference (computer, tablet, phone or TV). However, many of these sites can become highly addictive and parents/guardians should implement strong parental controls so that young people are unable to access material of a violent or graphic nature. Examples of streaming sites include:

  • Netflix

  • Amazon Prime

  • Disney+

  • YouTube

  • Hulu

  • Crackle

  • ITunes

  • PopcornFlix

Live Streaming

In addition, streaming can also utilise live streaming technology. This enables young people to create and share videos in real time. When used in positive way, live streaming is an excellent tool for children and young people to create identity and develop confidence and communication skills. Current popular live streaming apps include Facebook Live, Instagram Live stories, Twitch TV (often used by the gaming community), House Party and Tik Tok. However, unlike pre-recorded videos that can be cut and edited, live streaming is just that – live and uncensored. Therefore, if young people do not employ strict privacy settings, it could potentially be watched by hundreds or thousands of people. Viewers can also comment and interact live by posting messages and emojis.

There are many risks of Live-streaming:

  • Content. If they’re watching other people’s live streams, children could be exposed to age inappropriate content, including violent content.

  • Offensive comments. If a young person’s live stream is open to the public, viewers may be able to leave negative or inappropriate comments.

  • Live streaming is ‘in the moment’.

  • Digital footprints. If a live streamer makes a mistake, shares personal details, or broadcasts offensive or inappropriate material, they are doing so in public. It’s possible for viewers to record a livestream, and it could be posted online or shared widely.

  • Inappropriate contact. There can be hundreds, potentially thousands, of people watching a live stream, including people who might make inappropriate contact.
