Equal Education Opportunity
It is the policy of the Byram Township School District not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, sex, ancestry, national origin, or social or economic status in educational programs or activities and employment policies as required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and NJAC 6:4-1.1 et seq. Inquiries regarding compliance may be directed to the Business Administrator, Affirmative Action Officer, Byram Board of Education office, telephone number (973) 347-1047.
Students are advised that courses in physical education, health and life science and music are offered to students on a coeducational basis.
No student shall be denied access to or benefit from any educational program or activity; there shall be no differential requirements for completion of course offerings or courses of study solely on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, sex, ancestry, national origin, or social or economic status.
Students are advised that the athletic program, including but not limited to intramural, extramural, and interscholastic sports shall be available on an equal basis to all students regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, ancestry, national origin, or social or economic status.
Every student in Byram Intermediate Schools is entitled to participate in all curricular and co-curricular activities free from physical, verbal, or sexual harassment from all persons.
Students who believe they have been denied access to any program for any of the above reasons or have been illegally discriminated against should be aware that grievance procedures exist through which they may seek to remedy the discrimination.
Public Notice of Asbestos Management Plan
This notice is to inform the public of the Byram Township School District’s Asbestos Management Plan. As required by law, an accredited management planner prepared an Asbestos Management Plan for each building within the school district. The New Jersey Department of Health on September 6, 1989 approved these plans. Three-year mandated re-inspections are completed periodically. As stipulated in the Plan, mandated facility inspections for asbestos containing materials are conducted every six months. The Asbestos Management Plan and the three-year re-inspection reports are on file and are available for viewing in the Board of Education office.
Affirmative Action Statement
A committee of parents and teachers serves with the Affirmative Action Officer as the Affirmative Action Advisory Council. The purpose of this committee is to monitor the district’s compliance with the state and national mandates regarding equal educational opportunities. This committee assists the Affirmative Action Officer in fostering the equality of sexes and races and in heightening the awareness of the staff, students, and community to the affirmative action goals and principles.
Drug Free School Zone
In order to demonstrate its serious concern for the use, possession and/or distribution of illegal drugs near our schools, the New Jersey Legislature wrote and passed the New Jersey Drug Free School Zone Law. According to this law, any person distributing, dispensing, or possessing with intent to distribute a controlled, dangerous substance or controlled substance analog (look alike substance) while on any school property used for school purposes which is owned by an elementary or secondary school or school board, or within 1,000 feet of any school property or school bus, or while on any school bus, is guilty of a crime of the third degree and shall be sentenced by the court to a term of imprisonment. Drug Free School Zone signs are posted near the Lakes Elementary and Intermediate Schools. Questions concerning the Drug Free School Zone Law should be directed to the Principals or Guidance Counselors.
