Mr Walter
I am Mr Walter, Head of Humanities.(Geography, History and RE). Prior to joining the team at Bullers Wood Boy's School I was Head of Geography for seven years at a large and successful secondary school in Redhill, Surrey. I was delighted to join the Bullers team to recapture my love of teaching boy's, having begun my career at Ravenswood School.
Although I am a Geography specialist I am delighted to head up the Humanities team as this group of subjects has so much to contribute towards producing well rounded young people who have a natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge. My passion for Geography was sparked through the engaging and fascinating lessons of the Geography teacher that I had for 5 of my secondary school years. He helped me to see the relevance of the subject to all aspects of our lives from the human, to the physical to the environmental and to appreciate the inter-connectedness of the world. In my own teaching I seek to be equally as inspiring to the students I teach and hope that they are able to appreciate the wonder, beauty and mystery of the world in which we live and to realise the responsibility that we all have as global citizens to look after the environment for the enjoyment of future generations.
Outside of the classroom I love to travel and explore different places both abroad and within our own country. I enjoy walking and spending time with my family as well as reading and DIY. I enjoy playing both football and badminton and support Charlton Athletic.
Mr Knight
James Knight fought at Waterloo as a 14-year-old, was later transported to Australia for stealing a horse. James was in his 50’s by the time he made his way back to England, fathered 10 children, the youngest of whom was Bert. Coldstream Guard Bert served in the trenches, then in the Kent County Constabulary. Second son Eric joined up at 18 in 1944 and had his first taste of international cuisine guarding Italian prisoners of war, who would happily hold his rifle for him when he visited the WC. He then embarked on a tour of Europe and all the major conflicts on the road to Hamburg. Eric married his childhood sweetheart Margret in 1948, who unbeknown to him worked at Top Secret Bletchley Park during the war and couldn’t tell anybody for 40 years.
Margret said that I was asleep in the womb and daydreamed through childhood. Mostly about playing for Tottenham, or being a rock star. She didn’t think Art College was a good idea and I should get a proper job, but largely due to Eric, I arrived at Rochester School of Art and went on to work in advertising agencies.
When you get married and the children start arriving, it’s time to get a proper job. Eric was really chuffed about his daughter in law Giuseppina, as it brought back fond memories when she cooked. I went to work in Paper mills with my father in law Alessandro and became a problem-solving paper technician in research and development. I turned out for the Mill football and cricket teams, played in bands at the weekend and did a bit of freelance graphic design.
The Open University appealed to my working-class roots and Harold Wilson was my hero, so I signed up to study Humanities. No sooner had I completed an honours degree; I was offered redundancy. It took me a while, but I eventually found the best job in the world.
Mr Walker
I’m Mr Walker, Assistant Headteacher. I joined the school last September and hugely enjoy being a member of the growing BWSfBs community.
In my role as I oversee two important aspects of school life: behaviour for learning and the safeguarding of students and staff. In addition to this I work closely with the Heads of Year to support the Personal Development curriculum. I also teach in the Humanities Department, mostly as a Geographer.
When not at work I’m a big fan of exploring all that London has to offer. I’m happiest when eating pretty much any food (but I have a pretty sweet tooth!), drinking coffee or pottering around an exhibition or watching a movie with friends.
To make sure I stay healthy I frequently run, swim and go for long walks, both in the city and surrounding countryside.
Mrs McClean
Hello, I am Mrs McLean. I have been teaching over twenty-five years and have the privilege to say I have been able to teach in many types of school and all sorts of children. At Bullers Wood School I am a Religion and Ethics teacher but have many strings to my bow. As and RE teacher I enjoy giving student the opportunity to share ideas and discuss all possibilities, thus helping them understand the world they live in.
I love teaching children…and especially boys. They bring so much diversity and creativity to each day. My motto is ‘Be kind and try your best’. I try hard to see something unique about each child and would like to think I can play a small part in nurturing that to grow to its full potential.
I am also a mother to a little boy that I adopted who keeps me immensely busy when I am not at work. I love spending time with him and encouraging his sporting and creative talents from Tennis, to model making and cooking. It certainly keeps me busy. I am looking forward to really getting to know and support the boys here at Bullers Wood School. Hope we can learn together and fun together.
Mr Evans
I have been a teacher of Humanities subjects for nearly thirty years, working in different schools in South London and also for two years in Hastings. I have been involved in leadership work for most of my career but am really happy to focus purely on teaching at Bullers Wood. I love teaching and enjoy sharing learning experiences in the classroom, seeing individual students thrive and grow as learners.
I enjoy teaching both RE and Geography but my first love is History. My favourite period of history is the 20th century. I was always fascinated by the stories my grandad told me about his experiences in World War 2 in the Royal Engineers and when he served in the artic circle in Russia at the end of World War 1, where the British army helped the White Russians fighting a civil war against the new Bolshevik government. When I was a boy, I loved to look at old black and white pictures from these times and to imagine what life was like for people then.
I continue to learn new things from history every day and by being a teacher of history, I have learned lots more about the Romans, the Middle Ages, the Tudors, the Industrial Revolution and the history of medicine. I like to learn more about the history of other peoples and cultures around the world and often listen to history books on line, even when I am going to sleep at night.
I have lived in Bromley for over 20 years with my wife who is a brilliant English Teacher. Our son went to Darrick Wood and now works for IBM as a software developer. Our daughter is in year 8. I love to spend time with my family and to walk our dogs in the woods after school every day.
Mr Stevenson
I am Mr Stevenson and as well as being a humanities teacher, I am also one of the heads of year. I have been teaching for over 20 years History, Geography, RE as well as Politics, Sociology and Psychology. Most of my career was spent in west London, but most recently I worked in Margate on the coast. I have a real passion for learning and believe that we are all lifelong learners and I always enjoy learning new things from the many comments and questions that students ask in my lessons. I have always loved teaching humanities as we constantly question what is going on around us and it links very closely to one of my main passions which is teaching politics.
I love spending my spare time with my family ( I have three children) and reading and traveling as much as I can. I am also a keen sportsman and support the current European champions and also coach football on the side for a local team where I live.
That's me , oh and the picture next to me is one of my hero's. Quite simply an awesome human being who faced massive prejudice, but always looked cool whilst prevailing.
Ms Hurray
Hi, my name is Ms Hurray and I have joined the Humanities department at Bullers Boys this year as a History and RE teacher. Prior to becoming a teacher I used to work as a TA (Teaching Assistant) in a few primary schools in SE London, and even as an Early Years Practitioner in a nursery!
My greatest love has always been History (apart from my daughter, of course) and it has started when I was a child with the stories my mum told me about my great-grandfather, who was a prisoner of the Russian gulag during WWII. My favourite part of History though has always been Classical Civilisation, with a particular interest in Greek history and Archaeology.
I did want to become an archaeologist and went ahead and got myself a degree so I can be the new Indiana Jones but my daughter would not have appreciated that too much. So I became a history teacher, instead. Which I absolutely love!
Apart from teaching, digging and learning, I love travelling with my daughter, reading, drinking coffee and trying new foods.
