Eighteen Year-Old Students

Students have the right to be treated as an adult if they are age 18 or older, unless the court has appointed a guardian. Regardless of the student’s age, they are responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment and maintaining appropriate behavior by adhering to school policies, rules and expectations.

Permission slips for participation in field trips or other school activities may be signed by 18 year old students. Eighteen year old students may sign their own absences and late notes, but parents will be notified of absences and tardy incidents for the 18 year old students on the same basis as other students.

Except as provided below, report cards, discipline reports and other communications from the school will be provided to responsible parents or guardians of all students regardless of the age of those students unless eighteen-year-old students request that, in a manner designated by the administration, all communications from the school be made to them and not their parents or guardians. The administration will grant these requests when the student’s parents or guardians are informed or when the student provides documentation that he or she is not a dependent student, as defined in Section 152 of the IRS Code of 1954.
