I met with the Area Superintendents and came away feeling supported and valued. Your Area Superintendents recognize teacher librarians have a vital role to play in the strategic plan. Equity will be a leading driver this year and as such, district resources are being reallocated. Among the first items to get some equity love is OverDrive. The district will be purchasing a district level membership! (All students don't have access yet, we are in the beginning of the negotiation process)
OverDrive title selection will be influenced by the literacy program, but the budget allows us to continue to develop the collection as before. Keep adding desired titles to the Collaborative Orders for purchase at the end of Semptember.
If you have already paid your OverDrive invoice, you will be reimbursed through SRA (process still being developed). If you would like to keep your funds in OverDrive for library specific titles, let me know so I can designate that amount. We don't have all the details hammered out yet, but I'll let you know as soon as we do. Don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
As for other resources, we're thinking about databases, Newsela PRO, and Maker Kits for next school year. Bring your wishlist to PD for discussion. Stay tuned!
And in other good news, the Sora app has been fixed!
We will be having our own PD day on September 16, 2019. Woohoo! Using the passage of House Bill 19-1110 Information and Media Literacy this sprin as inspiration, our Professional Development will concentrate on how to support students and staff with separating Fact from Fiction.
We’ve taken the suggestion from Regina Hoskins (thank you!) on our Dotstorming from August and will do a book study on Jennifer LaGarde and Darren Hudgins' Fact vs. Fiction: Teaching Critical Thinking Skills in the Age of Fake News. The district has purchased a copy of the book for each of you to have on hand during PD, then take with you.
During PD, we will discuss ideas from the book, ways to incorporate those ideas, and share how you have already been incorporating media literacy.
In addition, we will:
I look forward to seeing everybody at PD on September 16 at Aspen Creek, 8:00-11:30
Creekside Elementary
Mallory is excited to be joining the BVSD TL Team as the TL at Creekside Elementary! Mallory grew up in Arvada, CO and is back after having spent the last 8 years working as a Teacher Librarian at the American School of Barcelona, the International School of Belgrade, and the International School of Panama. She got her BA in Linguistics and Secondary English Education from CU Boulder and then worked in DPS as a middle school language arts teacher while getting her Library Masters at CU Denver. She is an avid traveler and foodie, loves a good trivia or game night, and going to see plays and musicals... and is really excited to have access to theatre and all the books she could want in English again!
Coal Creek Elementary
Hi, Sarah Kirby here. I have been working in BVSD for 10 years now. I was a classroom teacher for 8 years and a librarian at Heatherwood elementary the last two years. My first years in the library were amazing. I leaned on everyone in the BVSD community that I could (thank you for your help, you know who you are). I was given a library and a school full of children and I had the opportunity to change the mold with the schedule and work collaboratively with teachers. I also worked closely with IT/Ed Tech (at the time) and was a Guinea pig for the Nexus tablets. Which was a bust in the end but, it pushed me to present at BVSD Digi-day and I learned a ton. While at Heatherwood I the pleasure of working with Jessica Arment, an amazing teacher and librarian! I am just returning from a 2 year leave of absence and am now working in the Coal Creek Elementary Library. Over the past 2 years on leave of absence, I created 2 children...crazy! Let's just say, I am ready to be back. ;) One of my favorite children's book authors is Byrd Baylor, I specifically love Everybody needs a rock. I have to mention Peter Brown's, My Teacher is a Monster! where the teachers name is Mrs. Kirby...no, I'm not! :) I look forward to catching up with everyone and contributing to the BVSD Teacher Librarian group.
Alicia Sanchez Elementary
My name is Lauren Richards and I recently started my seventh year of teaching. I taught in Adams 12 for three years and then taught 5th grade for three years at Alicia Sanchez International School. I am now the new Teacher Librarian at Sanchez. This is a position I have always been interested in and was so excited when the opportunity came along! I recently started my MA in Learning Design & Technology with the K-12 Teacher Librarian Endorsement through CU Denver. When I'm not at school I enjoy going on walks, snowboarding and spending time with my family and friends. I look forward to getting to know and learning from all the Teacher Librarians in BVSD!

Broomfield Heights Middle
My name is Michael Sparks and I am the new Teacher-Librarian at BHMS. For the past nine years I have been a Language Arts and Humanities teacher at the University of Colorado at Denver, two high schools, and here at Broomfield. I love traveling the world and have been on a three year endeavor to read all world classics before I turn 35. I look forward to meeting and collaborating with all of you.
Centaurus High
Hi, my name is Shoshannah Turgel, and I'm thrilled to be the new Teacher Librarian at Centaurus High School. Most recently, I worked as Library Coordinator at Grandview High School in Cherry Creek School District. Before that, I was a Reference and Access Services Librarian for New York University at their New York and Shanghai Campuses.
I'm originally from Long Island, New York, and I have lived in several different places including London, Zurich, and Shanghai. I have two children in BVSD, a 3rd grader at Fireside Elementary and a Kinder at Community Montessori. We've settled in Colorado because we love the outdoors. In addition to climbing, hiking, and yoga, I love to read, plan events, and collaborate with others. I look forward to working with all of you.
With the new BVSD.org website roll out, our old Insignia Training Page, which was hosted on Sharepoint, has been archived. Many links are broken. We have moved the content over to Blogspot. Some of the formatting has gone wonky, but the content should still be helpful. The Search feature is helpful, as are the tags. I will clean the formatting and update the screenshots later this year.
