At Big Valley Christian Athletics, our heart is to develop athletes who compete with excellence, integrity, and Christ-centered character. As we continue to pursue that mission, we want to bring clarity to an important dynamic within our athletic culture: the relationship between policy and grace.
Policies are not barriers—they are guardrails that help us maintain fairness, safety, consistency, and accountability. They provide structure for our athletes and clarity for our families. Scripture affirms the value of order and boundaries:
“Let all things be done decently and in order.” – 1 Corinthians 14:40
“The way of the fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise person listens to advice.” – Proverbs 12:15
Policies help us create an environment where every athlete knows the expectations and every team can function well. When followed, they protect our students and strengthen our sports programs.
At BVCS, we also deeply believe in grace—because God has extended grace to us. Grace does not erase consequences or dissolve structure; instead, it seeks restoration, understanding, and relationship within those structures.
“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” – John 1:17
“Bear with each other and forgive one another... Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” – Colossians 3:13
Just as Jesus modeled grace without compromising truth, our athletic department strives to balance both. There will be times when grace looks like a second chance, a conversation, or support in navigating a difficult situation. Other times, grace means lovingly walking an athlete through the consequences of a choice so growth can occur.
For parents and families, our commitment is this:
We will do our best to create and uphold clear policies so expectations are consistent for all student-athletes.
We will do our best extend grace when appropriate, seeking to reflect the heart of Christ in how we guide and correct.
We will do our best to communicate openly, helping families understand decisions and reinforcing a culture of partnership.
We will do our best to aim for restoration, not punishment. Our goal is growth—not perfection.
Athletics provides moments that test character, reveal areas of growth, and shape our students spiritually. As parents, coaches, and an athletic community, we share the responsibility of modeling how to respond to both policy and grace in a Christlike way.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6
Thank you for partnering with us to help our Christian Student Athletes grow not only in skill, but also in wisdom, discipline, humility, and grace. Together, we are preparing them to compete—and live—for God’s glory.

BVCS Attendance Policy
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES FOR GAMES AND PRACTICES
A BVCS Student must be in class at least 4 COMPLETE periods of a 7-period day. If your team leaves school early during the sixth or seventh period, it is not considered attendance for that period. Exceptions will be made for medical and dental appointments and family emergencies. If a student leaves school during the day due to illness, they are not allowed to return to school to participate in a game or practice, regardless of the number of classes attended, unless given special permission by the Director of Athletics.
When a student-athlete knows they are going on vacation, they should notify their coach immediately. All vacations should be planned around the sports schedule, especially for major events (such as games, tournaments, playoffs, and camps). A vacation is an unexcused absence from practices or games; when the student athlete returns, he or she is not guaranteed their previous position (i.e., on the starting team, playing time, etc.). Remember, time away from the team can be a determining factor for making a team if tryouts are needed. Coaches can excuse these items if they are pre-arranged well in advance (before the season begins), but that is at the coach’s discretion.
If the student-athlete attends school, they must attend practice, even if they do not suit up.
Players may be required to practice or participate in games on weekends and during school vacations. These practices are very important, and players/parents are asked to plan around them and attend.
Please keep class attendance and in-class time in mind when evaluating student-athlete absences.
Alex Avila, Boys Soccer, Goal Keeper
Alex Avila, Boys Soccer, Goal Keeper
Alex Avila turned in a commanding performance in goal this week, anchoring the Lions’ defense with several match-saving stops and calm leadership from the back. The 2024 All-League goalkeeper is continuing his excellent form this season as part of BVCS’s rapidly improving boys’ soccer program. His consistency between the posts, paired with his poise under pressure.
Ezra Stubbert, Wrestling
Congratulations to Ezra Stubbert — 100 Match Club!
Big Valley Christian Athletics is proud to recognize Ezra Stubbert for reaching an incredible milestone in his wrestling career, officially joining the 100 Match Club.
This past weekend, Ezra stepped onto the mat for the 103rd time as a Varsity wrestler for the Lions, marking not only consistency and durability, but a level of commitment that sets the standard for our wrestling program. Reaching 100 matches is a rare accomplishment, earned only through discipline, perseverance, and a relentless work ethic.
We are grateful for the example he sets and excited to watch him build on this achievement throughout the rest of the season.
Congratulations, Ezra! Your BVCS family celebrates this milestone with you. Go Lions!

Athletic Sports Clearance
Are you considering coming out for a Spring season sport? Before you can participate in tryouts, you must complete the online clearance at Home Campus. Both parents and athlete will need to finish the online application and upload your current sports physical. Don't delay! We don't want you to miss out on participating in Lions athletics.
F.A.Q. (Frequently asked Questions) about Athletic Clearances
Want to play a sport at BVCS?
Complete online information and signatures on homecampus.com
Upload your current (within 1 year) sports physical onto homecampus.com
You do not need to turn in any paperwork to the office. It is all done online.
You will receive an email from Home Campus notifying you that you are cleared.
Home Campus does not alert the Athletic Office when you complete your portion of the clearance process.
Please note that we are the ones who manually mark student-athletes as “cleared.” If you do not receive an email confirming your clearance, that means you're not cleared yet.
If you have any questions or believe there’s an error, feel free to contact michellec@bvcs.org to check on your athlete's clearance status
Student-athletes will not be allowed to participate in tryouts, practices, or games until this information is complete and you are cleared.
Does the clearance from last year still work the next year?
No, it does not carry over
If the sports physical has not expired yet and I uploaded it last year, do I have to upload it again this year?
Yes, we cannot see the previous year's documentation. Each year is separate. You can upload that same physical from the previous school year if it is still valid.
If the sports physical expires mid-season, do we need a new physical?
Yes, we are alerted when it expires, and the athlete cannot continue to participate in any physical activity until a new one has been uploaded.
All the athletes on this wall have played 12 sports in their high school career: 3 sports per year for all 4 years in high school. This award is recognized with a lifetime Lions pass that gets you into all Lions home games for free for life and we put your name on this wall to celebrate you. Being a 12 sport athlete is no small feat and requires dedication to sport and to academics to manage that intense load. We are proud of all our 12 sport award winners and challenge you to be one too!
