Our team had gone through many configurations of the machines and found that this idea with a pair of wheels on each side over and over gave us the most consistent and efficient scoring method for scoring on the speaker. We started with 2 pairs of compliant wheels on either side; then we tried 2 pairs of Coulson wheels on the other replacing the compliant wheels. This led to us finding that the consistency of our shot improved. Slow motion video revealed that with the compliant wheels on both sides, the note would turn over mid-air 180 degrees depending on the distance, we recognized that this was due to a lack of rotation.Â
To stop some amount of the spin on the note we switched one side to Coulson wheels we were able to get the correct amount of spinning we wanted on the wheels. We believe that this is a result of the compliant wheels flaring when they get up to speed, getting us longer contact time with the game piece and the speed experienced with the Coulson wheels combined.
