In 2008, the COE voted to institute OMNI as the internal governance structure of the College of Education. This vote initiated a departure from a structure governed by a constitution and by-laws and led to the development of Operating Policies and Procedures. The OMNI structure is an explicit attempt to put democratic principles of shared leadership and shared governance into practical action. Our Operating Policies and Procedures Handbooks are aimed at documenting the procedures and processes we use in a clear, transparent way so that we might be consistent in what we profess to practice.
The COE Handbook, the COE Curriculum Committee Handbook, the 3R's Handbook, The PSC Handbook, and the Quality Assurance & Assessment Handbook each contain a compilation of the policies and procedures specific to the operations of the College of Education as they affect faculty members. These policies and procedures are intended to guide our specific work in the COE within, and consistent with, the broader context of the Butler University Faculty Handbook. The Administrative Policies are a collection of policies that fall under the Dean's purview and discretion.
NOTE: While the COE faculty and staff are primarily responsible for developing and carrying forward the vision, mission, and goals of the college and for determining the procedures we will use to reach those, we recognize the COE exists as a system within a system. Our operating policies and procedures guide our work internally, but must also work in synchronicity with the broader University system. Faculty are responsible for accessing the Butler University Faculty Handbook which contains the Constitution and by-laws of the Faculty Senate. Further, faculty are expected to utilize the Butler University resources for accessing university policies and procedures related to curriculum, assessment or professional standards.
