The Curriculum Maps of the College of Education are our bridges between here--where we stand right now in our current reality and there--where our aspirations and vision are leading us. The curriculum maps are important because they document and chart our current reality, our current pathways and our current markers of progress toward our vision. Vision is fresh in every moment so if we seek to map yet uncharted territory, it is vital that we trace the route and plot the new course based on accurate accounting, not myths and legends.
Curriculum mapping is a hopeful process. Hope isn’t an emotion. It is a cognitive process made up of goals, pathways and agency. Hope exists where goals we set are pursued tenaciously and with the belief that we are empowered to reach them. Hope like this can only exist where trust exists. Trust in a group working toward shared goals might be defined as choosing to risk making something you value vulnerable to another person’s action--whether that which you value is a new idea, a new plan, or a new program. Doing this requires consistent, intentional, sustained efforts at building a trustworthy community where principles of good communication are practiced, not simply acknowledged.
If we develop our maps from a place of trust and hope, we then freely choose to follow the curriculum maps because we see our own contributions, hopes and visions reflected in the documents not because we are forced to, not because we can’t be trusted to chart our own course, but because the journey belongs to all of us together. Your journey belongs to no one but you, but no one goes it alone. Our individual actions have a ripple effect on our collective efforts.
Curriculum maps and LTT-approved syllabi can be found by clicking on the corresponding button below. Note: This is currently under development.
Note: The templates below are for course or program development specifically within the COE. These templates must be used in conjunction with the required documentation set forth by the University Curriculum Committee (UCC), Core Curriculum Committee (CC), or other reviewing bodies in order for proposals to be considered complete and ready for review by the College of Education Curriculum Committee or Quality Assurance & Assessment Committee.
Because Curriculum Maps and LTT-approved Syllabi reflect our current reality, they will be:
Reviewed annually at the start of the academic year through the Learning and Teaching Teams (LTTs) with the support of the undergraduate and graduate chairs who will work to ensure the maps are accurate and any changes necessary have been guided through the curriculum review channels in a timely manner.
Faculty will have easy access to up-to-date versions of curriculum maps and LTT-approved syllabi through this Google Site. The syllabus elements are part of the Quality Assurance System and seek to keep course alignment and evaluation consistent.
Faculty will also have easy access to writable syllabus templates through Google Site by clicking on the buttons above. Faculty are encouraged to use the templates as it provides all required information in a standard format for convenience. However, faculty aren’t required to use the standard template for their own course use as long as all required elements are represented and no changes are made to required elements.
Faculty are only required to use the standardized templates when submitting proposals to the Curriculum Committee or Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee for review or consideration. The primary purpose of the syllabus template is to document all elements of an individual course as a single component of the larger curriculum map. Any changes at the course level would have a ripple effect on the rest of the map.
NOTE: As describe in the box with the templates, in addition to our COE templates, curriculum changes that move out of our college and onward for review by committees at the University level must comply with documentation requirements for the reviewing body. The most up-to-date documents must be obtained and used by the faculty member through the Butler University website.
Curriculum sheets delineate the coursework required for students to matriculate through the major requirements. Until 2017-2018 academic year, the majors were designated as Programs with distinct faculty membership. Faculty members with a designated Program Coordinator were responsible for ensuring coursework and assessments were aligned appropriately to graduation, accreditation and any other internal or external requirements. Curriculum Sheets for each major were updated annually by the program coordinator in consultation with other appropriate collaborators. Beginning in AY 2021-2022, updating curriculum sheets is the responsibility of the Data Manager in consultation with appropriate collaborators such as Program Review Leads. Curriculum sheets will be:
Reviewed annually at the end of the academic year through the Learning and Teaching Teams (LTTs) meeting in late April or early May with the support of the content specific Program Review Leads who will work to ensure the curriculum sheets are accurate and any changes made in the prior academic year are reflected in the updated sheets that will be presented to the incoming class.
If changes are necessary after the April/May LTTs, a voluntary designee from that LTT will work with the Data Manager and content specific Program Review Lead to ensure curriculum sheets reflect appropriate changes in this specific time-bound task.
Available to Academic Advisers (in LAS as well) at the start of the new academic year and housed on the university website and shared Google drive through Canvas.
Students follow the curriculum sheet that is in place when they declare their major and/or minor.
Minors demonstrate coursework taken that either connects to a major in an interesting way or connects to a passion for learning beyond the specific requirements of a major. A license, on the other hand, is an endorsement that a candidate has the knowledge, skills, and disposition required to teach in that area at the novice level. Just like the curriculum sheets for the major coursework, the Minor Curriculum Sheets delineate the coursework required for students to matriculate through the minor requirements.
