Welcome to Barstow High School's CTE Department
Information, Communication, and Technology is what ICT stands for.
There are three pathways in this sector at Barstow High.
Computer Science
Networking and Computer Repair
Robotics (still under construction)
Each one of these pathways has two courses in it. Please plan on taking both so you complete the pathway; it looks better to future employers and colleges.
If you just want one class in the field of computers, take Computer Concepts. It is an overview class that introduces a lot of general computer concepts like what is inside a computer, how the Internet works, how does software work, digital citizenship, as well as productivity apps that Microsoft of Google offer such as Word/ Docs, Excel/ Sheets, PowerPoint/ Slides.
More information on Computer Concepts including example assignments is available.
The Networking pathway covers the preliminary courses necessary if you want to go into cybersecurity, ethical hacking, and network administrator. It teaches you the insides and outside of computers. The Networking pathway has two courses:
Computer Repair 1.
Networking.
More details on these courses are in development. Mrs. Oberlies currently teaches both of these courses.
Computer Science is a field that applies to any industry: health care, law enforcement, agriculture, fashion, architecture, manufacturing, aerospace, and the list goes on. The Computer Science pathway has two courses:
Computer Science Principles. This course has an Advanced Placement (AP) option.
Click on the links above for more details on these courses. Mr. Brinkley currently teaches both of these courses.
We are planning on having a robotics 1 and 2 course pathway for the 2021-22 school year.
Although there are no robotics classes in the 2020-21 school year, we have a team of five students in the Computer Science Discoveries class that meet during student support time to learn how to build and program a robot to drive and sense objects. We are hoping to have a Robotics level 1 course in the 2021-22 school year, and Robotics 2 course in 2022-23. If you are interested in joining a Robotics Pathway, make sure to indicate your interest on the CTE form.
Some of the robots we plan on using are: VEX robotics, BOE-Bots, and Barobo robots. We hope to be involved in as many competitions as possible including UC Davis' C-STEM video competition in 2021 and if we ever come back to school VEX robotics competitions as well.
