District Attorneys Visit Burke County High's Criminal Justice Class

Andrew Palmer and Rex Myers are both district attorneys in Augusta, Georgia. The pair took a trip to Waynesboro, Georgia, to speak to students in the Law and Public Safety class. In fact, both Palmer and Myers are Burke County High graduates.

The students asked an array of questions about their daily work life. The attorneys described some of the strangest cases they've worked on and a few of the hardships they experience on the job.

Andrew Palmer is a district attorney representative for the Adult Felony Drug Court Program, and he has been licensed for over a year as of now.

Rex Myers has over nineteen years of experience in Georgia.

Their visit was both informative and intriguing, and of course, greatly appreciated.



Defense Attorney Visit

Criminal Justice Essentials Class Visits Plant Vogtle and Augusta Technical College's Police Academy

Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

The Law and Public Safety Essentials class visited Plant Vogtle and Augusta Technical College/Augusta Police Academy. At Plant Vogtle, the students were initially given a brief introduction. The students visited the security staff and were educated on the requirements and qualifications for becoming employed in the security department with Plant Vogtle. We were given a general overview of the security processes for Plant Vogtle and how vital security is at Plant Vogtle. The students were also shown the training facility at Plant Vogtle. At the Augusta Technical College/Augusta Police Academy., the students toured both the campus and academy. During the visit, the students were educated on the police academy enrollment and the types of training offered at the academy. The students were permitted to do a live use of force simulator which responded to actions and allowed the students to demonstrate many of the skills learned in the classroom. The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the academy and the live demonstrations they were allowed to participate in. This brought the classroom teachings to life. Criminal Justice Essentials Class Visits Courthouse

The Criminal Justice Essentials class took some time to visit the Burke County Courthouse for an educational, informative, first-hand experience of what happens in the judicial system.

Students spoke with Judge Douglas J. Flanagan and asked him an array of questions, ranging from his background to his experience in the court. Judge Flanagan is juvenile court judge of Burke, Columbia, and Richmond County.

Law and Justice Second Level Class Visits Georgia Public Safety Training Center

Thursday, January 31, 2019.

The Criminal Justice Essentials class was granted with the opportunity to visit the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. On the trip, students were educated on the types of training offered at the center. Students were also shown the instructional sites, including Crash Investigation and Reconstruction, Physical Training, a mock village for law enforcement and fire training, Driver Training, Firearms, Special Services, and the Investigations site.

The class partook in lunch with various law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Human Resources, Department of Juvenile Justice, and Georgia State Patrol.

Effective and efficient training are the cornerstone to being successful in criminal justice.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Waynesboro Police Department's Major Henderson Speaks with Criminal Justice Essentials Class

Wednesday, January 30, 2019.

Major Henderson was featured as a guest speaker in the Criminal Justice Essentials class. Henderson talked about the reality of the criminal justice system and how the police department actually works. Henderson also spoke about various topics in the Criminal Justice field, from an overview of criminal justice, agency administration, training and the hiring process.

He exposed the students to a vast amount of valuable life skills, such as one's choices impacting their future and positively interacting with others.

The Burke County High School would like to thank Major Henderson from the Waynesboro Police Department for spending his entire day with the Law and Justice classes instructed by Mr. Maurice Boyd.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
