2019-2020

THE EXECUTIVE BOARD

Norie Lyn Dela Cruz

President

After being one of the associates of the Mathematics Society, I've learned a lot that helps me to discover more of myself. And since during that time most of the EB 2018-2019 is already graduating, I ask myself who will lead and continue the legacy that the MathSoc started. Then I decided to run for President at first I was hesitant since I am only a 2nd-year student at that time and based on the past EB's, the President position is only for the graduating students yet I decided to run for it because many people believed in me that I can. Even at first I am doubting and questioned myself, how can I lead and handle the responsibilities since most of my co-officers are older than me. But when we started the academic year it was really a roller coaster for us but we survived and conquered it even the pandemic came our organization did not stop serving our students. And I want to thank my co-officers with that because they make me handle and manage the position of being president.

Jeszelle Jene Galvan

Internal Vice President

I always find myself to be firm on my decisions but I'm the worst at handling peer pressure. It was why when most of my friends took an opportunity to run for the Mathematics Society Executive Board for AY '19-'20, even unready, I applied without a doubt. I don't exactly know how to lead but I'm familiar with the basics of being a good leader, so I didn't fold. Surely, it got me a bit worried.

I am not a people person. The organization changed that. It was one of the many things MathSoc helped me overcome. Because not only they care about the students' academic development, they also promote individual self-growth and improvement. There are a lot of things I could tell about how the experience helped me grow but the thing I'm most grateful for, is that MathSoc didn't give me friends. The organization gave me a family.

External Vice President

What I liked about MathSoc, at bakit nga ba ako sumali dito. Siguro magkwento ako ng kaunti hano?

So when I was in first year being a BS Math AS student, year 2015, kagaya ng iba wala akong idea sa course, and nasa isip ko din that time na mag-shift nalang ng course after 1st or 2nd semester. Ang alam ko din ‘di talaga ako active sa org noon, and parang nagpapamember lang ako kasi mandatory s’ya that time. But then after a year, nag-stop ako ng pag-aaral dala ng kakulangang pang-pinansyal, then graduating din kasi that time si ate, and hindi pa free tuition. So ayun, nagwork ako, then year 2017 nagbalik ako ng pag-aaral, 2nd sem na since na-credit yung mga subjects ko nung 1st sem. That time wala na ding 2nd year ang AS kaya nag-change ako ng specialization into CS. So nag-try akong mag-apply for MathSoc EB ’18-’19. But sad to say, di ako pinalad. After that, naging active member nalang ako until magkaroon ng opportunity na mapasama sa MathSoc family. Year 2018-2019, naging PIC Committee Associate ako, kasabayan ko noon sina Pres Norie at Pres Reynan. Those activities and events that we conducted and organized, na-realize ko na ang dami palang job opportunities na pwedeng pasukan after graduating this course. Then fast forward dahil mahaba na tong kwento ko, year 2019-2021, I’ve become the MathSoc External Vice President. Di ko alam kung bakit 2 years ako sa position na ito, pero masasabi ko na isa to sa pinaka-challenging at best experience ko as a student. Kasi during 2 years of being EVP, na-experince ko s’ya in face to face and even in virtual class. And sobrang thankful ako sa MathSoc at sa lahat ng nakasama ko rito, for all those good and unforgettable experience na pinaranas n’yo sa akin.

Sana kagaya ko, ay marami din kayong maging magandang karanasan being a member or being an officer of MathSoc. Siguro mag-iwan nalang ako ng line, “In order to discover new things about yourself, you have to get out of your comfort zone. Grow with the flow.”

Secretariat Committee Head

College life is indeed hard pero yung MathSoc yung masasabi kong nagbigay pa lalo ng kulay sa buhay ko. MathSoc is my second home, a place for growth, and something that I would treasure and would be proud of for the rest of my life.

Dati lang akong member to be honest. Pero simula nung chinallege ko yung sarili ko na sumali sa Sail Academy ng BulSU OSO, I was given an opportunity na maging isa sa officers ng MathSoc. I did it voluntarily kasi gusto ko nang lumabas sa shell ko nun para malift-up yung bumabagsak kong self-esteem dahil na rin sa pagbagsak ko noon sa dream school at course ko. I promised myself na hindi ko man ma-achieve 'yun gaya ng SHS classmates ko, I can make a better future for myself. I'll make the best out of the things na meron ako. And I'm so thankful and proud of myself for what I did, dahil I am what I am right now because of that. Worth it ang pagiging parte ng MathSoc.

I really recommend fellow students to join and experience the life in MathSoc. College life is more fun with MathSoc!

Sumali ako sa MathSoc kasi alam ko na matutulungan ako nito mag-grow at mag-learn ng new things and makakilala ng mga bagong kaibigan. It also helped me kung paano mag-manage ng time sa acads at sa organization.

Since my first year days, I had no intentions to join on any organizations because I just want to focus on my study back then. It all start when I met one of the current president of the org, 'di ko nalang s'ya papangalanan. And after noon, unexpected things happened kasi nagulat ako na isa ako sa candidate for one of the positions of the org election and mas nakakagulat pa kasi hindi naman ako nagpasa ng application. And after ng election, thanks to God at nanalo naman ako for that position.

Mathematics Society was really a big help for me. I started in nothing, hindi ko nga alam kung ano 'yung kaya ko pero MathSoc gives me a lot of people who is willing to help me. Ngayon, the challenge is in you. Are you ready to solve the mystery of why Mathematics Society will plays a big part of your college life? Join now and be one of us!

I always wonder what a college organization does to it's fellow students. I admire those people who helped without anything in return. That's why I became interested in joining this organization; I also want to help in the least possible way I can.

During my first year, I'm really nervous about applying in this organization since most of the Executive Board are seniors and we aspirants undergo a lot of dreaded interviews and screening from them. However, I passed with their qualifications and didn't expect that I would be part of MathSoc for four years. Lots of adjustments and tensions happen but the memories made with my colleagues are always and forever in my heart. I may not be sociable or outgoing like them but the idle time I spent with them is one of the best parts of my college life.

I was waiting for an opportunity, I really want to join because my closest friends are part of this org, but there’s a hindrance for me, I don’t want people to think or even talk to my back saying “Hindi kasi siya nanalo kaya nagpunta ng org”. That’s the least I want to be heard, because I will not do those things “para may mapuntahan lang”, I will do it because i want to. Then opportunity came, my friend invited me to apply for a position, he told me that one of the officer saw my potential and it will be a waste of talent if I can't showcase it to the college. Though back, then I’ve decided to stop joining to any extra curricular and focus to my acads, they are good in persuading and I just can’t let this opportunity go. I guess when you really want something, it will lead you to the place that you should be.

No one pushed me to join, but their trust helped me to decide, they don’t think of me of someone who failed the election campaign but someone who can lead. And I thank MathSoc for that.

I want to thank MathSoc for giving colors to my college life, I was looking for something that could enhance my leadership skills and true enough I found it in mathsoc. I hope this legacy will continue, to be able to help students and somehow change someone’s life or even make an impact. Thank you for making difference.

Life changing!
