Robotics Consortium

About the Class

Instructors: Mr. William (william.jones@bugsbrooklyn.org) and Mr. Cole (cole.belmont@pratt.edu)

The ten students selected for this course have shown excellence in academics and school citizenship. Each week we travel to the Pratt Robotics Consortium at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. At the Consortium, students apply geometry and algebra as they use industrial robots to solve real world problems and make our city more sustainable!

Please use this site to see student work and photos of the lab and for updates about open studio days at the Consortium and field study at various energy and architecture related sites in Brooklyn.

Design Module #1 "The Sphero"

The first design project teaches students the algebra, geometry, and programming skills needed to use the larger, industrial robots. To gain these skills, students learn to manipulate a robot called the "Sphero". The Sphero, like its name implies, is a spherical bot that uses block programming to move along X and Y quadrants. Once, students are able to program the Sphero at any direction, speed, and distance to create patterns, then, they are able to move on to more complicated machinery like the laser cutter!

Guest speakers frequent the Consortium to bring real world connections to the lab.

A few weeks ago, the designer of the new African Burial Ground National Monument in Manhattan spoke about his project. It was great for the students to hear the connection between social sustainability and human rights and architecture!
