The following lesson plan is structured in compliance with Dudeney and Hockly (2007) "Warmer, Web, What's next" framework in "How to teach with Technology" (2007, p. 37). The chosen tool to be used in this lesson plan is TENOR in order to make it more inclusive.
Tenor is a site where you may either create your own gif or where you may find a gif of your interest. This webpage is very useful as students tend to use gifs all the time; thus this may be meaningful for them.
How can we use TENOR?
Click on the following link to see how to create a GIF on Tenor.
Benefits of using TENOR in the inclusive classroom:
GIFs can enhance engagement by providing a visually appealing and relatable form of communication, making the learning environment more inclusive for students with different learning styles, abilities, or preferences.
SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition):
SAMR framework, which stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition, is a model for integrating technology into education. Here are some potential benefits of using Tenor GIFs in an inclusive classroom, aligned with the SAMR framework.
Substitution:
Substituting static images with animated GIFs can enhance emotional expression, making communication more engaging and accessible for all students.
Modification:
It involves having students use GIFs in presentations or projects, allowing for a more dynamic and expressive representation of their ideas.
Redefinition:
In a traditional approach, students find limited opportunities for collaboration and expression. Redefining the learning experience by fostering collaboration through the creation and sharing of expressive GIFs, learners communicate and collaborate more effectively.
Bloom's Taxonomy:
It is framework used in education to categorize learning objectives into levels of complexity. The levels are: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating and Creating. Here are some potential benefits of using Tenor GIFs in an inclusive classroom, aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy.
Remembering: GIFs can serve as memory aids, helping students remember information more effectively through visual and animated cues.
Understanding: GIFs can enhance understanding by providing dynamic visual representations, helping students visualize and comprehend abstract or complex ideas.
Applying: GIFs can be used to illustrate the application of concepts in real-world situations, making abstract ideas more tangible.
Analyzing: GIFs can aid in the analysis of processes or sequences by visually breaking them down into steps, promoting a deeper understanding of the components involved.
Creating: GIFs can be a powerful tool for creative expression, enabling students to create dynamic and animated presentations, projects, or multimedia content.
Lesson Plan: using TENOR in the inclusive classroom
Unit of work: Feelings and emotions Language level: Beginners
Topic: Feelings and emotions vocabulary Language focus/objectives: Recognize different feelings and
Theme: How are you feeling today? emotions, Physical location: ICT lab
and use of "verb to be"
Time allotted: 1:15hs
This lesson plan leverages technology to engage beginners in language learning, allowing them to explore and express emotions in a fun and interactive way.
Warmer (10')
In order to prior knowledge they have seen recently (feelings and emotions vocabulary and how to express them),the students will be encouraged to answer how the characters are feeling as the teacher point at one of them.
Web (40')
The students are going to work on the following online worksheet. Then, the teacher is going to provide students with simple instructions on using the GIF creation feature in the Tenor app. as they will be encouraged to explore a variety of GIFs as samples of what they are going to do. After that, they will be asked to choose one of the feelings they have seen and create a GIF which represents such feeling.
What's next (25')
The students are going to watch the following video on Youtube to learn how to to insert a GIF into a PowerPoint presentation. After that, they will be creating their own slide on a collaborative PowerPoint presentation. They will be asked to insert their GIF into the presentation and write how they are feeling as seen in previous lessons. As a final stage, the teacher will show them how the collaborative PowerPoint presentation looks life after their contribution.
