This Fall, I will be offering the following groups based on the results of a Needs Assessment completed by classroom teachers. Students can be referred by staff members, as well as parents. If a child is referred for group, parent permission is needed. Please click on the "form" tab and download a permission slip if you feel your child would benefit from one of our groups.
Small groups meet during Intervention time weekly. Typically, groups have 5-6 kids in attendance. At times, I have taken up to 8 students. Each week, we focus on the group topic and complete supporting activities such as role-playing, games, and reading and sharing grade-level literature. Groups run for 6-8 weeks depending on the needs of the group. Confidentiality is stressed throughout all of our groups to ensure the privacy of all students.
The purpose of this group is to help students learn to regulate their emotions and feelings. Students are taught to recognize how certain feelings place us in one of four zones and how we can use coping strategies to help us move from one zone to another.
At times, young students struggle with routines and structure, and it is often difficult for small children to regulate their emotions. The purpose of this group is to help support students that may need a little extra confidence/"strategies in their toolbox" to get off to a good start in their school-career.
This group will meet weekly during grade level lunch-time. In this group we will focus on social skills, problem solving techniques, and conflict resolution strategies. This is a great opportunity for your child, in a relaxed setting, to meet with other kids and open up about how things are going at school with their peers. For many kids, they need the reassurance that there is someone at school to talk to if things come up with their peers.
The purpose of this group is to help students cope with "changing families". This group will allow children the opportunity to share their feelings about their changing family and explore ways that they can deal with the change. The purpose of this group is to help students realize that many other students are experiencing similar problems, and that problems stemming from the change are not insurmountable for them.
Because of the personal nature of this group, it is essential that a strong element of trust is established between group members. As always, group confidentiality is stressed.
