Students will learn who their school counselor is and the different ways school counselors can help support them and their families. They are encouraged to go over their coloring packet with you!
Emotional Vocabulary and Feelings Identification
Scribble Spot YouTube Read Aloud - We will read this during the lesson.
Students will read Scribble Spot (review from kindergarten), but this time will go through Spots of Emotions vocabulary flashcards to expand their feelings vocabulary. Students will then practice deep breathing with a paper airplane activity.
How to handle worries at school and home.
The Very Hungry Worry Monsters YouTube Read Aloud - We will read this during the lesson.
After reading The Very Hungry Worry Monsters. students will create a Venn Diagram sharing ways they handle worries at home, at school, and at both. Then they will get to create their own worry monster craft. Worry monsters help provide a tangible and playful way for children to externalize, process, and manage their worries. By writing down or drawing their worries, students can feel a sense of control and relief from the anxiety associated with those thoughts. This is great for emotional regulation.
Friendship skills
Enemy Pie YouTube Read Aloud - We will read this during the lesson.
Students will read Enemy Pie by Derek Munson and complete a friendship pie craft that focuses on qualities of a good friend (Ingredients) and steps we can take to be a good friend (baking instructions.
Explore the 5 senses with a mindful craft.
Students will explore the 5 senses by rotating through different stations while completing a mindful snow globe craft.
Sight - Spot the Differences game
Hearing - Guess what 1st grade teacher is saying what winter themed words using recordable buttons
Taste - Students can enjoy an optional peppermint
Smell - Students can enjoy smelling optional winter themed essential oils.
Touch - Students will take turns digging through a bucket of fake snow to find hidden "Inside Out 2" figurines of different emotions.
Conflict Resolution Skills
Students will discuss a variety of ways they can solve problems in a positive and peaceful way. Some strategies include using an "I Message," compromising, using a "A Bug & A Wish," and more. We discuss the importance of calming down before trying to solve any conflict and the importance of being specific when talking about problems with others.
Before spring testing begins, learn how to handle stress and not feel overwhelmed.
Opal Octopus is Overwhelmed YouTube Read Aloud - We will read this during the lesson.
Students will read Opal Octopus is Overwhelmed, discuss what it means to feel overwhelmed, and explore 6 steps to R.E.S.E.T. with a cute Octopus craft. The steps include getting plenty of Rest, Eating healthy foods, Saying "no," Exercise, and Taking charge of your time.

FightChildAbuse.org - Bellbrook-Sugarcreek & Ohio Department of Education and Workforce approved curriculum.
Separate information will be sent out in February with more information about the law behind this lesson and includes Opt-out information. Child abuse prevention education is required yearly K-8 in Ohio.
Self-Control skills
Clark The Shark YouTube Read Aloud - We will read this during the lesson.
Students will read Clark the Shark and create a foldable fortune teller style craft to review self-control skills that help us focus and do our best at school.
