Grading art isn't subjective, it's qualitative. Instead of tallying the number of right answers, an art teacher assesses the qualities of the work, such as choice of subject, handling of media, and control of the composition. That means, incidentally, that it's harder to grade art than a spelling test, an arithmetic quiz, or a multiple choice history exam. In general, it's hard to grade any assignment where the answers don't fit neatly on a computer card.
Grading art is a way to give students constructive feedback on their learning and practice, and to be reasonably consistent about the standards we ask each student to meet.
Grading art with a rubric fairly assesses 4 qualities of any work of art and allows for feedback. The subject, techniques, and medium may change with each assignment, but the criteria remains the same.
Assessing art is about the processes, not the final product. Creating in the studio is project based learning and the multi-step processes facilitate growth in many areas. The learning happens in the doing, therefore assessment begins from the first sketch to the end product.
Learning art techniques is only the beginning! Studio Habits of Mind are skills and strategies that help you confront the unknown, solve problems creatively, and articulate your decisions clearly. Building strong habits helps you develop an artistic mindset and create sophisticated artwork. Students will have various forms of formative assessment including drawing challenges, worksheets, sketchbook prompts, exit tickets and reflections.
After that week , students must petition and explain to me why more time is needed; however, more regular class time will not be given. Students must ask for an EAGLE Pass and see me to complete work. Students who do not talk to me about goals for completion will receive a partial grade.
Artwork takes time to create and also time to grade. Assignments will be assessed and recorded in a timely manner. Loss of instructional time is difficult to recreate. Upon returning to school following an absence, students must obtain an EAGLE pass to request instruction missed.. Students will be given the same amount of time to make up the work as the student was absent unless other arrangements are mutually agreed upon.
Missing projects will be marked missing UNTIL it they are turned in. If projects have already been graded, you must notify your teacher that you have turned your assignment in late. Grades will change, but a late turn in may result in waiting for a grade change. Patience is appreciated.
