The weather continues to get better and after being home for so many weeks, it's time to get outside! This week's assignment is all about art from nature. Lots of people think you need fancy art supplies to make art. It’s time to rethink that notion. Art can be made from anything, and this week our focus will be on creating art from natural materials. Use sticks, stones, rocks, leaves, bones, flowers, grass, etc. If you can find it in nature, you can use it. Go ahead, get outside, and create some art.

HOME can be a mythic, imagined place, the actual location of your childhood memories, the actual brick-and-mortar building in which you live. It certainly is the place we have been for the past 8 weeks of this pandemic. For some of us, home is a source of comfort. For others, home is a feeling that we carry within us, perhaps because we long for a home, or have a vision of HOME than is different than our current situation. HOME and all of its meaning is a powerful word that conjures up many feelings. This week we will be building a cardboard representation of home to make larger art and auctioning them for as a fundraiser for COTS.
EMS students have been busy creating cardboard houses and the word HOME using found objects. These "homes" are going to be put together as one larger art piece and auctioned off. All proceeds will be given to COTS - Committee on Temporary Shelter.
The link to the fundraiser is here. All proceeds will be donated to COTS.
There are times in life that are so potent, so unusual, so significant that it is important to document them. This is one of those times. There has not been a pandemic in over 100 years and never in our lifetime has life shut down the way it is right now. This is a remarkable and notable moment. This week's assignment is provides an opportunity to capture YOU at this moment in time.

After looking at the work of cartoonist and illustrator, Saul Steinberg, students were invited to create a paper bag mask for themselves, and their families and then take a posed photo. Here are there creations!
Responding to the idea of masks, especially as it relates to our current relationship with mask wearing during this pandemic, students looked at the work of artist Kimmy Cantrell, whose own relationship with making masks has been extraordinary. Students were invited to create a cardboard mask or a mask using other recycled materials. Here's what they came up with.

Can science be beautiful?
How do you feel about the coronavirus and the effects it has already had on your daily life, your family, and our community?
What gifts or lessons can we glean from this tragedy?
