My whole academic life starting from the first grade until my senior year I have been in the Dual Language Program. Studying and learning in two languages, Spanish and English. Thanks to this program I was able to become bilingual, being able to communicate with my family in Spanish and communicating with the public in English. I decided to choose English as my language development since in my Junior and Senior year I've been taking a class of English as my second language, IB English B HL. Helping improve and have a deeper understanding of English literature and exploring all kinds of English text types, thanks to this class I was able to have a newer and open-minded mindset of different cultures.
In this assignment I had to write a personal blog with any topic choice. I decided to write about my experience growing up as Mexican-American and the struggles I had to face but how I was able to guide myself to the good path thanks to my friends and family.
In this assignment I picked the topic of phone use and how impactful it can be in damaging face-to-face communication. Writing about my opinions on technology and writing about the pros and cons. This was a really fun project to do especially thinking about how I wanted to title the headings, using idioms to hook the reader in wanting to read more.
Everyone in the class had to make a slide presentation about a person who had a deep impact or inspiration in their life, creating a learning dedication slide. I decided to write about my kindergarten teacher, she helped me see the beauty in the "negative" things. Helping me shape my identity for the better.
Pre-Assessment and Self-Analysis of Language Proficiency
Post Self Assessment
At the end of the year I was able to fully understand this language even though I already knew this language since elementary. I was able to strengthen my skills and knowledge. Being able to practice all types of text types such as a blog, a review, brochure, and a letter. This helped me improve my knowledge on proper grammar and when it should be formal or informal. Having a deeper understanding of this language helped me understand that I can also learn other languages with ease. For example one can learn a new language if they include it in their daily life such as watching shows in that language, reading books, listening to music, and practicing that language everyday. An important note is that if one wants to become an expert in that language they need to have some practice such as exploring the culture behind that language and meeting friends or new people that have a deeper understanding and background of that language. Slowly adding and including that language in your daily life. I have always wanted to learn ASL and thanks to my English skills it can help me take a step into ASL since ASL stands for American Sign Language, I already have the English part done. As well as taking 2 years of ASL in the start of my high school life I was able to have an understanding of ASL and even if I didn’t continue ASL in the end I was able to understand how it functions and how important it is like other languages. A beautiful language that is not by speech but by hand gestures with a soothing movement. With this knowledge I’m sure I could be able to continue this language in the future by practicing it every day.
