Antes de ser libres by Julia Alvarez was a book we read for the class, a book that will be included in the IB test. A story based on real historical events focusing on the main character, Anita a 12-year-old young girl discovering the real impact of dictatorship in Dominican Republic. Fighting to discover the truth and escape.
I included this book in this portfolio because it was one of my favorite books we read in class. Reading from the perspective of Anita and how confused she was to discover the truth behind dictatorship. Julia Alvarez wrote this book in first person which caused the reader to feel the emotions of Anita.
Bendíceme, Última
Bendíceme, Última by Rudolfo Anaya was a book we read as a class that was going to be included in the IB test. A fictional story focusing on the main character in New Mexico, Antonio a 6-year-old boy that is discovering his future battling with his mom's dreams wishing for him to be a priest and his dad wishing to go to California. While on his journey he his guided by his mentor, Última a healer who is always misunderstood as a witch. As he's growing up he is confronted by deaths, protecting Última from someone who wants to kill her, confused about his religion, finding out about other religions, and choosing what he wants to do for his future.
I included this reading because I honestly really enjoyed reading it. Reading from a first perspective, Antonio, and understanding his point of view. A kid being confused on what he is supposed to do and curios about everything.
In this assignment I had to write a personal blog with any topic choice. I decided to write about my experience growing up as Mexican-American and the struggles I had to face being stuck in the middle and how I was able to guide myself to the good path thanks to my friends and family. Being able to guide myself between Mexican- American, Spanish- English, and the values and morals between both cultures.
In this assignment we choose a “protagonista” from the Mexican revolution 1910. I chose the soldaderas, a group of women soldiers who fought in the revolution. I created a poster and essay about the history, success, failures of the Soldaderas, and my analysis of the research.
I really enjoyed learning about the women in history especially in battle, being a great influence to all young girl demonstrating that they can be as strong as men.
As a final project I had to create a fictional story that will connect to the ambiguous case. Explaining all the steps of how I solved the problem as well as demonstrating all the math.
I had some trouble with this assignment due to not fully understanding what we were supposed to do and how we were supposed to model the ambiguous case connecting it to the story.
In a small group we created a presentation about the 5 strategies for resilience, I took the slide of meditation. Explaining that if one meditates it can bring them to the present instead of thinking about past mistakes and what could go wrong in the future. Helping deal with negative emotions that could be present.
In this assignment we did a quick visual representation on who we are and who we want to be in the future. On the left side I drew myself as overwhelmed and anti-social while on the right side I drew myself as someone I aspire to be. Being able to be confident and somewhat social. This assignment helped me realize that while I do have some negative traits such as being easily overwhelmed, anti-social, shy, awkward, and be very nervous I realize that I carry some positive traits with me such as being kind, being creative, a good listener and a good communicator.
