Overview
Pottery was a very important innovation in Mesopotamia because it impacted people's everyday life in ways such as cooking, storing, and transporting food and water. The development of pottery began around 7,000 B.C. Pottery was mainly made out of clay. It was formed and shaped by hand then the Mesopotamian would fire and glaze the pottery to protect the pottery by making it waterproof. By making the pottery water proof it allowed it to have an insulated layer so that the pots could hold water. Some pottery was also decorated to show the Mesopotamian creativity in art.
Cooking in Mesopotamia brought new techniques to the Mesopotamian. The advances in cooking were being able to boil water,simmer meat, and cook vegetables.The Mesopotamian would set clay pots on top of hot coals to cook food. The pottery that was used to cook looked like round pots with no handles.Cooking with pottery allowed the Mesopotamian to cook more efficiently and cleaner.
Pottery brought the development of the use of storage for food and water while still keeping moisture in it. The pottery keeps liquids in it preserved. Using this method of storage in Mesopotamia brought a big advantage by helping them be more prepared for when they may need the stored food and water. It also made trade easier because they could transport the goods in durable clay baskets.
Advancements that Pottery brought to Mesopotamia
The potters wheel was invented to make it easier and faster to make pottery.
The durable pottery made it easier to hold stuff. Which allowed Mesopotamian to easily trade the pottery with goods in it.
