Mesoamerica was a region found within the tropical lowlands of current day Guatemala. The culture of this region thrived more than other civilizations of their time. Culture was an important part and well-known portion of their civilization. The people during this time had many different cultural practices, architecture, inventions, and ceremonies. Some of the most prominent cultures in this area include the Maya, Olmecs, and Aztecs.
The Olmecs were the first group of people in Mesoamerica, showing up in 1600 BCE. The growth continued over the next hundreds of years with the Maya and Aztecs also becoming core civilizations. These regions were very diverse, combining a multitude of different cultures and ideas from each civilization. These groups built a strong environment and a core area by 600 CE, the year they reached peak power. A prolonged drought ended the Mayan empire in 800 CE, but the Aztec civilization continued thriving. Eventually, Mesoamerica came to its downfall when the Spanish conquistadors invaded the Aztec empire in 1521.
There are multiple interesting inventions that came from Mesoamerica. Things such as pyramids, obsidian tools, hieroglyphics, chocolate, mathematics, and chinampas are innovations that paved the way for modern inventions. Pyramids were built to provide an area for religious worship and sacrifices. Obsidian tools were known for their sharp edges, providing an edge for the Mesoamerican people. Maya hieroglyphics are a series of pictures set in a logo syllabic system. Mesoamerican mathematics included a multitude of different theorems that worked together to prosper the civilizations. Chocolate had many uses such as a drink or currency for the Mesoamericans. Chinampas helped the Mesoamericans farm in marshy landscapes. Solan will be going more in depth about the pyramids, McKinley will provide more information about obsidian tools, Natalie will talk more about the hieroglyphics found in Mesoamerica, Kalaya will discuss the development of Chocolate, Joshua will inform about mathematics, and Quincy teaches about the chinampas.
