Introduction
The Italian Renaissance was a period in time where many innovations in science, art, and philosophy were made. One of the most important inventions to come out of this era was the printing press. The printing press was a revolutionary innovation that had many lasting impacts on society. Before the printing press was invented, books, newspapers, and religious texts were all written by hand. This made books harder to get which harmed education and society as a whole. After its arrival in renaissance Italy all texts could be mass produced. Life was forever changed by the invention of the printing press.
Origin of the Printing Press
The Printing Press arrived in Italy in the 1400's. It was originally invented around 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg in Germany. Starting from Germany, the printing press quickly spread across Europe through many different trade routes. Merchants then brought the printing press to Italy when it was already flourishing during it's renaissance.
How the Printing Press Changed Education
The printing press forever changed education in the Italian Renaissance. Printing allowed for the mass production of books which lowered the costs of books dramatically. Schools had more books to help teach how to read and write. Literacy rates were much higher after the invention of the printing press. The printing press also changed other forms of education. More standardized business practices made merchants and salesmen more consistent across Italy making the economy have a stronger structure.
