Introduction to the Musket
The musket of the Italian Renaissance is one of the most important weapons in human history. It was used in many battles and left a massive impact on the battlefield. One of the first sightings of it in use was in the Battle of Cerignola on April 28, 1503. The Spanish had used the musket and crushed their enemies. This proves that the musket is an excellent weapon.
Origins of the Musket
While it is not exactly known when the musket was invented, we do know that the musket evolved from the arquebus. The arquebus was a long-barreled muzzle-loaded matchlock gun. However, the arquebus could not penetrate through heavy armor. The solution to this was to make a gun that could fire a larger ball; the musket. Unfortunately, due to the musket needing to be large to shoot a larger ball at a powerful force, the musket was heavy. And thats how the musket came to be.
The Muskets Use in Battle
The Musket had a huge role in the battlefield. It was one of the first weapons to effectively penetrate heavy armor, rendering it useless. As seen in (image #), one of the many ways the musket was used, it was used in a formation called the "pike-and-shot" formation. The pike-and-shot formation had what were called pike-men in the front and in the back, and musketeers in the middle. The pikemen in the front were crouched on the ground with their pikes pointed diagonally used to protect the musketeers from gunfire and any men on horses charging into them. The pikemen in the back stood up and held their pikes straight acting as another layer of defence. Lastly, the musketeers in the middle were equipped with muskets to fire upon oncoming enemies.
