The Royal Road in Persia was one of the best accomplishments of the Empire. It was built during the reign of Darius I in the 5th century BCE, this highway connected to the Achaemenid Empire stretching over 1,700 miles from Sardis near the Aegean Sea to Susa. It was more than just a road, it was a symbol of the power of Persia, their organization and their trade. (Livus)

Before the reign of Darius made many diverse regions like Mesopotamia, Egypt, and parts of India. However, ruling over these territories made a huge challenge for Darius. He realized that if he wanted to maintain his power he would need a good way for communication so he decided to make the Royal Road. He built it by connecting and improving older routes. The road allowed messages, officials, and several goods to go across the empire. According to Herodotus, royal couriers could traverse the whole road in just seven days using a system of relay stations and fresh horses that were waiting for them, which was a record breaking time. Along the road, stations were set up for travelers to get rest, get food, or exchange horses. The Royal Road’s design reflected greatly on the Persian Empire. Along the road there were several stations that provided the people rest, supplies, and safety. These stations were also a part of the postal system that allowed Persian kings to send reports across the Empire. (Silk Road Programme)
