In his Third Critique (The Critique of Judgment), Immanuel Kant states that:
In painting, in sculpture, indeed in all the visual arts, including architecture and horticulture insofar as they are fine arts, design is what is essential… The colors that illuminate the outline belong to charm. Though they can indeed make the object itself vivid to sense, they cannot make it beautiful and worthy of being beheld.
Your goal for this project is to prove Kant wrong. Use color as the primary medium in the creation of two works: one using additive color (a projected image) and another using subtractive color (a large-format print). The two works should begin with identical source materials, created in either a CMYK or RGB color space (for the print / projection, accordingly). When creating the second version, do not reposition / change the forms themselves, their placement, or colors, simply change the color mode (and be sure not to “merge layers” when changing color modes) and manipulate the image by alter the blend modes and order of the layers in your document.
Note that you will need to make arrangements to print your work using the large format printers at the Multimedia Lab (MML) at the Granoff Center for the Arts (or via the Sidney E. Frank Digital Studio in the Rockefeller Library, though printing at the MML is hands-on and therefore highly recommended). Be sure to give yourself ample time to experiment and iterate based on your results. Making smaller prints (scaled-down versions and / or sections of your image) may provide valuable insight into the translation from screen to ink on paper without the investment of time / resources of a full-sized print. More information regarding specifications and printer access will be announced in class.
We will critique your work in class on Tuesday, November 1 or Thursday, November 3.
Please upload a .zip file containing .psd files (with layers) for both the print- and screen-based images and photographic documentation of your print to the Google Drive Folder below by Tuesday, November 1 at 12pm.
Please adhere to the naming convention Familyname_Forename-P2.zip
By Thursday, November 10 at 12pm, update your portfolio site to include documentation of your project, including web-optimized images (at a reasonable resolution), a short description of your work, and process images where necessary / helpful.
