FRIENDS OF THE PROGRAM:
I often tell my students that, while I know a lot about speech/debate, I definitely don't know everything. I credit the vast majority of my own learning and growth to having several different amazing teachers over the years: "It takes a village." As such, while I would definitely love the chance to work with as many kids as I can, I can't help but also recommend other programs/coaches to students as well.
I am a big fan of Joel over at Debatetrack and all of the great resources he puts out for the community. His topic lectures have been invaluable to my students' preparation.
Check out the Debatetrack website, like them on Facebook, and subscribe to their YouTube channel here!
The Golden State Academy is run by Victor Rivas, a fellow James Logan Forensics alum, my very first debate partner, and one of the few coaches who I know genuinely cares about their students.
Victor's program offers all sorts of classes and camps for K-12 students of all ages and experience levels.
I will always have a soft spot and the greatest respect for the MSJ Speech & Debate program. I served as MSJ's Head Debate Coach in 2012-13. The vast majority of my middle school students hail from Mission San Jose's feeder school: Hopkins Jr. High. And nowhere have I ever seen a more amazing mostly student run program in my life. MSJ's students regularly offers speech/debate camps.
COMPETITIVE DEBATE LEAGUES/ORGANIZATIONS:
The National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) is the largest governing body for speech and debate in the U.S. They set the rules/standards for the speech and debate events that most K-12 students compete in and host an annual national tournament for middle and high school students.
The NSDA was formerly known as the National Forensics League (NFL).
The California High School Speech Association (CHSSA) is the organization responsible for promoting most of the competitions and leagues that I personally grew up competing in, and hosts an annual State Championships for high school and (recently) middle school.
The SF Bay Area and much of NorCal makes up "Area 1" of CHSSA, home to two of the state's most competitive high school leagues: CFL & GGSA.
While the Southern California Junior Forensics League (SCJFL) may be very distant neighbors relative to my program and its students up north in the SF Bay Area, its schools and coaches have regularly hosted us for some excellent middle school competitions over the years. The league is also responsible for the California Middle School Forensics League (CMSF) which has hosted a middle school state tournament since 2011.
2020 was bad. But it could have been a whole lot worse had it not been for groups and organizations like National Online Forensics (NOF) that came through clutch and provided students with the chance to compete in speech and debate tournaments despite the COVID pandemic.
My students and I are very grateful to NOF for providing some amazing tournaments at the end of the 2020 & 2021 school years.
TOURNAMENT LISTINGS:
You can find most of the speech and debate tournaments my program is targeting on the TOURNAMENTS page, which is home to the Brooks Debate 2020-21 Tournament Calendar. If you're interested in tournaments outside of that, these these three sites... (RIP Joy of Tournaments)
The overwhelming majority of speech and debate tournaments are hosted on Tabroom.com nowadays...
... there's ForensicsTournament.net
which is also home to its fair share of speech and debate tournaments...
... and then there's SpeechWire. The last place to check if you're looking for a speech/debate tournament and can't find it on those other two websites.
