I've been very fortunate in my 20+ year speech and debate career to be a part of several extraordinary teams. I've had the privilege of learning from and working with some of the best coaches out there. And year after year I've been blessed with extremely hard working and talented students and competitors. Below is a timeline of and some highlights from my career.

2001-2011: Competing & Coaching @ James Logan High School

2001-2005

I competed for James Logan HS 2001-05.

I won the MLK Invitational in Public Forum Debate twice: 2004 & 2005.

2007 ca champs

I coached the 2007 CHSSA CA State Champions in Public Forum Debate:
Asir & Curson.

2008 ca champs

I coached the 2008 CHSSA CA State Champions in Public Forum Debate:
Ashford & Nguyen.

2011-2013: Coaching Middle Schoolers in Fremont

In 2011 I joined Olive Children in Fremont, CA to coach middle school students and the Hopkins Jr. High team.

2012 NorCal cup

Our Hopkins MSPD team won the first ever NorCal Cup Championship in its first year!

2013 njfl champs

Our team won its first of three straight "Overall School of Excellence" awards & its first middle school national title:

2013-2015: The Brooks Academy

The Brooks Academy

I founded The Brooks Academy with several fellow Logan alums and our team continued providing coaching and classes primarily to middle school students in Fremont, CA and the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

2014 njfl champs

Another season, a second straight "Overall School of Excellence" award, and our students won all three of the events I used to compete in as a student back at James Logan HS:

Third straight "Overall School of Excellence" award and three more middle school national first place championship titles:

I began my competitive speech and debate career back in 2001 when the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) was still known as the NFL: National Forensics League. As a competitor at James Logan High School I competed in both speech and debate at local league tournaments and regional invitationals from 2001-2005. I began coaching in 2007.

Superior distinction

As a competitor I earned the then NFL's third highest degree: Superior Distinction.

Donus d. Roberts

The NSDA awards 1-6 merit points to coaches every time one of their students competes in a speech or debate round. The Donus D. Roberts Award is bestowed upon coaches who’ve accumulated 10,000+ points.

1-diamond award

The NSDA awards coaches their first diamond degree after coaching a minimum of five years and earning 15,000+ points. I was honored with my first diamond in 2016.
