As a mental health provider and parent, I know the start of a school year brings both excitement and challenges. That's why I wanted to introduce myself and a new service we are providing through Scanlan Center for School Mental Health. I'm Dr. Amanda Elliott, D.O., a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the University of Iowa. My work spans the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic.
We realize many students may be struggling with anxiety, mood, or behavior concerns and are having a hard time getting plugged in for a psychiatric assessment of their symptoms. Completing a psychiatric evaluation can help identify treatments that may support students at home and school.
We now offer virtual psychiatric evaluations – which are interview-based assessments of mental health symptoms to determine if a diagnosis may be present and what the treatment options would be for that diagnosis. If medications are one of the recommended treatments, we can provide short-term medication management until the student is stabilized, and then coordinate transfer of care back to the primary care provider.
This clinic is designed for students aged 10+ with primary concerns of depression, anxiety, and/or ADHD.
Psychiatry services are fee-based, and we accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid. Financial aid is also available for those who qualify. More information about fees is provided during the initial consultation appointment with the family; there is no fee for the initial consultation.
Our psychiatry service flyer can be found here. There is additional information on our website.
