What knowledge do they need?
What skills do they need?
-what? What is the object? A shield? A decorative plate?
-where? Where was an object found? Where was a photo taken? Where was a text written?
-when? When is my source from? Sometimes we can be exact such as a date on a diary extract, sometimes we have to estimate using other evidence and knowledge to help us
-who? Who wrote my source? Who did my object belong to? Who made it? Who buried it?
-why? Why was this object made? Why has it survived? Why was this evidence written? etc
This guide is useful to help us.
In this lesson we will be developing this skill...
The Lindisfarne Gospels are thought to have been written by Eadfrith, a monk who became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 698 and died in 721
It is written on vellum (calf skin) using a quill or reed and dark brown ink
Many different pigments are used in the illustration, including lapis lazuli ( a deep blue rock from the Himalayas)
The elaborate illustrations helped people understand the meaning in the book
It was used for worship
