A dark age is a period of time with significant decline (cultural, economic and intellectual) OR a period of time we don’t know much about.
What does an archaeologist do? Watch this short trailer of 'The Dig' -a film about a real archaeological dig and consider how archaeologists can help us learn more about the past.
In your books, create a mind-map using this question.:
If something is precious why would it be buried?
We are going to read an extract (below) from a story written in Anglo-Saxon times to look for evidence about burials. How can 'Beowulf' help us understand:
-Why precious objects were buried?
-Would everyone have had objects buried with them?
-Can an archaeological site help us understand the beliefs of a society?
You are going to be given a variety of images from the 'Sutton Hoo' archaeological dig. Discuss the questions and make notes to be able to present your answers to the class.
What is the function of your artefact?
What is it made from?
Is there anything particularly interesting or surprising about the object?
Challenge: Can you make links to other historical periods? (hint-which ancient civilisation buried objects with important people?
This is a picture of the ship discovered at Sutton Hoo. It was excavated in Suffolk in 1938. In 2016, scientists discovered a new material on the ship and historians have developed different theories about what it may be. How can ideas change over time of artefacts stay the same?
Challenge: Why don't you read this article and see what you think?
What do these accounts of Sutton Hoo teach us? How is the language they use different? What is the same about the language in them?
British Museum description of Sutton Hoo
Challenge: look at this archaeological report from Milton Keynes. Is it more like the British Museum description or the archaeological report? Why?
Discuss in your trios - Why do you think archaeological finds are so important for finding out information about the stone age? Why would information to hard to find from the stone age?
