LO: Can I use create a Pop Art print using styrofoam?
In the last lesson we created cartoon style paintings usng watercolours and colouring pens.
We learnt that Lichtenstein was heavily inspired by comic strips, cartoons and popular culture that featured in books, TV and films.
We applied patterns and lines to our paintings that may have been used in Lictenstein's work.
We have also used printing ink and craft foam to create prints that use strong, contrasting colours.

Resources needed for this lesson:
Styrofoam square blocks (1 per child)
A4 Paper
Feltip pens
Masking tape
Old newspaper/sugar paper
Printouts of cartoons
Scissors
Pencils
Printing inks (range of different colours)
Ink rollers and flat trays
Advice for teachers - complete this lesson in small steps. Keep pausing the video after each step, avoid watching the video in one go and losing engagement.
IMPORTANT NOTE - The styrofoam blocks can be broken very easily so please remind children to be gentle with them, particularly in the clean up process (see end of video for cleaning instructions)
Extra note: LO is incorrect in video, use the one at the top of this page
Extension activity below
Advice for teachers - When getting ready to cut out the faces, you can go back over the outer edge lines with the pencil to deepen the grooves. This will then make the cutting much easier and the foam should almost break away just by using your hands.
Aim to have completed two colours by the end of your second lesson. This way children should understand how the reduction method works.
If you have time... progress to adding a third colour, but remember that the ink needs time to dry before each printing stage.
Extra note: Model how to clean the styrofoam blocks in the sink. Keep them flat and avoid bending, make a big point that these are very easy to break!
