During November - December 2022 we ran a number of consultation sessions with staff and students to gather feedback about the structure of academic modules. Please see below the more specific questions we asked.
We wrote a report of our findings and presented it at the University Teaching and Learning Enhancement Committee (TLEC) in February 2023.
Based on the feedback we gathered, we have built a first prototype of the template and we communicated a second round of consultations to ask staff for feedback to improve the template (see preview above).
Feedback from students
Survey. We asked students to complete a quick survey and give us feedback based on their experience with Moodle.
The survey and first round of consultations has now finished.
Online Feedback Sessions. We have asked students to sign up for online feedback session on Zoom and let us know about:
Any previous experience with using Moodle before joining Brookes.
How easy did you find it to navigate around the course and between sections? If difficult, with what specifically did you and/or the students have difficulty?
Do you have any suggestions for ways the layout and/or navigation could be improved?
Did your teachers provide you with an introduction to course layout and navigation during one of your seminar/teaching sessions?
Do you feel like it takes too many clicks to get to resources and other content?
Do you like to see your module's content one week at a time?
Do you usually access the recordings via Moodle?
Do you prefer to view links to the lecture recordings in context (i.e. connected to the week you are in)?
Have you ever wanted to refer back to a lecture recording, but not been able to find it?
How easy was it to find where you needed to submit your work? Could this be improved on?
Which course layout do you prefer? (grid, tabs, topics)
Feedback from staff
Online Feedback Sessions.
The first round of consultations has finished.
We asked staff to contribute to Moodle feedback sessions and let us know about:
How easy did you and/or your students find it to navigate around the course and between sections? If difficult, with what specifically did you and/or the students have difficulty? If possible, please include the Module code in your comments.
Did you provide your students with an introduction to course layout and navigation during one of your seminar/teaching sessions?
Do you have any suggestions for ways the layout and/or navigation could be improved?
What sections do you need (in addition to weeks)?
Do the activities/resources you add to your course have their own dedicated section or you add them in context (i.e. Quiz 1 goes to Week 1 and not to an Assessment section)
How difficult do staff find it to carry out routine editing tasks like moving content between sections?
To what extent do we need to be designing the staff experience (the admin/editing role) to be effective on mobile devices? Do staff use mobile devices to add to and edit content on Moodle pages? Might this practice become more prevalent in the future?
Do you think the use of images for each section of the course (if used) is effective?
Do you think the inclusion of a Course summary and Section summaries (advised no more than two or three lines) is beneficial?
What course format are you using? Do you change the format in settings? Do you have a template you or someone else applies to the module?
