Strengthening individual employee experience
As a manager or supervisor, you play a key role in strengthening the employee experience of the individuals who report to you:
- Ensuring people feel part of something bigger:
Your role:
Actively foster individual's awareness of and encourage their participation in the communication and engagement channels provided at University and local levels,
Ensure individuals are clear how their personal objectives and achievements contribute to the wider University purpose and ambitions,
Use 1:1s to check understanding around why decisions have been made and clarify where appropriate,
Practically support individuals to connect and collaborate beyond the immediate team/department by creating opportunities and time to do so.

- Supporting an inclusive community:
Your role:
Address any potential barriers to inclusion and belonging within your area and take proactive steps to build a climate where people feel they are included and belong,
Utilise the University's policies and guidance to support individual needs such as flexibility, reasonable adjustments, religious observance,
Proactively address issues such as discrimination, bullying or harassment that might occur in your area in line with University policies and guidance and support affected individuals directly and by signposting them to the wider support available.

Your role:
Use 1:1s and the PDR process to understand individual's strengths, interests and preferences and look to incorporate these into their objectives where possible.
Utilise the University's policies and guidance on reward and recognition to help individuals feel that their efforts are recognised and valued in ways that are meaningful to them,
Take proactive steps to support individual's overall wellbeing at work using the resources, guidance and policies provided,
Support individual's mental health at work, including taking steps to manage and prevent work-related stress.

- Enabling individuals to get a sense of achievement and progress:
Your role:
Clearly define individual role expectations and responsibilities and review these periodically to ensure role clarity,
Ensure individual team members are clear about their objectives, goals and expected performance standards and understand how performance and progress will be regularly reviewed in line with the University's guidance (PDR)
Support individuals to achieve their objectives and make progress including consideration of any training or development they may require to do so,
Manage individual performance both in terms of tasks and objectives and also behaviours (what they do and how they do it)
Support individuals in managing their workloads effectively by offering guidance and clear prioritisation, and by providing timely opportunities to discuss workload allocations and any related challenges.

- Supporting personal growth and development:
Your role:
Provide regular constructive feedback at 1:1s so that individuals are clear on both their strengths and areas for further development to support professional growth,
Look for opportunities to develop and build people’s competence and confidence such as working on projects/objectives outside their usual remit whilst providing additional support such as training, mentoring and coaching,
Discuss individual career aspirations and how these can be supported.

- Ensuring people feel enabled to do their work:
Your role:
Ensure that new starters have a good induction to the University, the team and their individual role,
Support individuals to navigate the University's governance structure, decision making and regulations (e.g. financial regulations, procurement etc)
Support individuals to practically overcome any organisational or systemic barriers or obstacles they might face - escalate if necessary,
Periodically check if individuals have access to the necessary equipment /IT and support them to address any issues or concerns.
