The model below is a simplified representation of the CAVE in 3D. It depicts the three projectors, each of which is positioned behind one of three screens. It also shows the six infra-red cameras, which are mounted above the screens, on the supporting framework of the CAVE. The cameras are used by the motion tracking system to track the locations of users.
The model is represented in X3D, an ISO/IEC standard for representing interactive 3D models on the Web. You can rotate and zoom into the model with the mouse and change the navigation mode. Pressing the "r" key resets the view. For details of this functionality, see the documentation for X3DOM which is used to display the model in this web page. This functionality is currently disabled, however, so the image below is static.
A recording of rotation sequence of the model is shown in the animated image below.
Users of the CAVE virtual reality environment put on 3D glasses so they can then move around inside the CAVE and perceive and interact with objects in 3D. The animation below is designed to show something of that experience. The animation below is a screen recording of an X3D model. As the user enters the CAVE and approaches the back face, 3D text appears. (The animation should start automatically after a short delay.)
