Welcome to Session 4 (your final Brookes Engage session for Year 12)! Below you will find a recap of the live session followed by more information on entrepreneurialism. Throughout the content you will find optional activities for you to complete.
We hope you were able to join us for your fourth Brookes Engage subject workshop and that you enjoyed the session! If you weren't able to join us no worries, our academic Lynn delivered an interactive session on the concepts of enterprise and entrepreneurialism, looking at the skills of an entrepreneur and important factors when starting up a business. You can have a look through the presentations below at your own pace.

During the session we discussed important skills to become a successful entrepreneur. Several skills came up, including and not limited to:
A risk taker
Leadership
Creative
Innovative
The ability to have vision
Confidence
Can you think of any others?
A key skill that came up was problem solving. Those with good problem solving ability will move a business forward more effectively.
"Problem solving is the process of using innovation and creative solutions to close that gap by resolving societal, business, or technological problems." - LibreTexts
Developing problem solving skills can start at home. Look at the picture on the right and pick out 5-10 problems in this room, next, clearly define the problem (this will help to improve your problem solving skills to find solutions). Then think about how you could solve this problem and how that can improve the function of the room, object and / or person using the room.
Entrepreneurs find solutions to problems they see in the world. This means that the ability to clearly define problems is important in entrepreneurship careers. Note: Don’t start with a solution – Define the problem better! Watch the below videos on tips on problem solving and problem definition.
During the session we thought about how we would start up a cake shop that is also a social enterprise.
Social enterprises are businesses which trade for a social or environmental purpose (Social Enterprise UK, 2023).
Important areas to consider are location, branding, products, pricing, promotion, finance and employees.
There are lots of useful podcasts, YouTube channels and websites that provide great advice on starting up a business. The StartUp podcast is a series about what it's really like to start a business and entrepreneurial life. Alex Blumberg talks with like minded business individuals, discussing the highs, lows and top tips of starting a business. In your next business class (or any relevant subject) you could suggest a class discussion on what stood out in each episode, or keep the podcast to yourself and listen to it in your own time.
Here are 24 entrepreneurial mindset cards from venturelab that help to build entrepreneurship skills.
Here are some game ideas to play with the mindset cards!
• Game 1: Each player is dealt 1 card. Players take turns to read the mindset definition and answer the question on the card.
• Game 2: Each player is dealt 2 cards and explains how the mindsets are in some way connected. (If the two cards both have the same mindset, swap a card!)
• Game 3: Give the complete deck to 1 player or to a group of players. Have them arrange and then explain how they perceive the mindsets to be connected.
• Game 4: Each player is dealt 1 card. One card is then placed in the middle. Each player must explain how their mindset card is in some way connected to the mindset card in the middle.
