“Race” is a concept created to describe or categorise people into various social groups based on characteristics like skin color, hair color and type, eye color, other physical features, or genes. “Race” is a social construction, meaning that it gives or denies benefits and privileges to certain groups of people depending on the above characteristics. Race is seen everywhere in society today.
For this project, students engage with race in society today by analysing media portrayals locally and globally. Students are tasked to make connections to Social Darwinism, scientific racism, eugenics, and phrenology from their study of New Imperialism.
