Course Objectives: Common Core English Language Arts Standards for reading, writing, speaking, and listening grades 9-10.
Texts Used: Collections Grade 10 Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2015 and selected readings.
Course Description
Composition: Emphasis will be on the process of writing effective papers on various writing topics for different purposes, including descriptive, persuasive, and expository. Students will utilize the steps of the writing process to effectively develop ideas, write drafts, revise and edit, and produce a final draft. Additionally, they will demonstrate the ability to write for various audiences and purposes. Grammar concepts based on the writing will be reviewed, practiced, and applied. A research paper assignment is a major component of this course, and students will be introduced to the steps for writing a research paper.
Literature: The emphasis will be on fiction and applying reading strategies to various literature with corresponding multi-modal assignments and projects. Students will identify and interpret themes and values representative of literary works and demonstrate knowledge of these through written work and class discussion.

Gothic Stories: The Fall of the House of Usher & The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, and excerpts from Dracula by Bram Stoker

Victorian Literature: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Dystopian novel/allegory: The Lord of the Flies by William Golding
