Online school is a new experience for many people joining our school, and even veteran homeschoolers may have a few questions. We’ve gathered answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to help you out. Check them out below!
Is Brilliant Microschools a private school or a homeschool?
Brilliant Microschools is registered as a private school accredited by ACS WASC. However, you may still need to comply with certain local homeschooling laws. Contact us for assistance with fulfilling local requirements or completing necessary documents.
Is Brilliant Microschools (BMS) a private school in every state?
This is a great question, and the answer comes down to understanding two parts of how schooling works across state lines
BMS is a real private school, registered in Florida and fully accredited by WASC. This means your child is enrolled in an actual school with a full academic program, teachers, grades, report cards, and, when the time comes, a high school diploma and transcript. Our diploma is a Florida private school diploma, and because of our accreditation, it is accepted by colleges, employers, and the military in all 50 states. It is also valid internationally
Each state has its own way of checking that students are going to school. In Florida, we handle that directly. We report attendance, keep student records, and meet all the state’s private school requirements on your behalf. In other states, we are not registered as a local private school, so we cannot legally report attendance for families there. Instead, families usually register their child as a homeschooler with their state. This satisfies the local requirement to show that the child is receiving an education.
Even though your child is listed as a homeschooler in your state, you are not doing the teaching. Your child is fully enrolled in BMS and receives the same learning experience as any other student. We also provide the normative assessment, portfolio, and any other documents that some states may ask for.
We provide clear instructions to help families register as homeschoolers where needed. It’s a simple process, and we’re happy to support you at any point.
Brilliant Microschools is a real, accredited private school
All students can earn a valid high school diploma through us
The only difference is how each state tracks school enrollment. In Florida, we handle it. In other states, families register as homeschoolers to stay compliant with local rules
If you ever have questions about how this works in your state, we’re here to help.
What is the class size and schedule for Brilliant Microschools?
General Education (GE) classrooms have 8-10 students per teacher, while Exceptional Student Education (ESE) classrooms have 4-6 students. Live classes take place either in the morning or afternoon, lasting 3 consecutive hours for GE and 2 hours for ESE. Class start times vary by teacher but typically fall between 8 am and 12 pm in your local time
How does the Brilliant Microschools schedule compare to traditional schools?
Our program aims to provide an average of 1.5 grade levels of growth in an academic year, though this may vary for each student. We minimize time lost in transitions and maintain focus within small classrooms. Our GE program provides in-depth coverage of core subjects and incorporates interdisciplinary projects, while the ESE program emphasizes core standards and life skills.
How are teachers selected, and what qualifications do they have?
Brilliant Microschools has a rigorous vetting process for selecting teachers, which includes multiple interviews, background checks, peer evaluations, and trial lessons. Our teachers are experienced, qualified professionals committed to providing high-quality education to all students.
Who should I contact if my child is experiencing peer issues in class?
Brilliant Microschools is committed to providing all students with a safe and supportive learning environment. Your child’s teacher should always be the first point of contact for any classroom issues, whether academic or social. Our school follows a consistent procedure across all classrooms, established by our school board, administration, and leadership team. Additionally, we have an Honor Code to help teachers detect and address potential issues early on
If you need to bring something to our attention, please start by contacting your child's teacher directly, either through Toddle or the email mentioned above. If, after communicating with the teacher, you feel additional support is needed, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Parent Support Team. They work closely with the teacher, principal, and other staff to ensure that all steps are followed according to our Honor Code and tiered support system, assisting everyone involved in any classroom incidents. To look these over, check out the Respectful Learning Environment page.
How do Brilliant Microschools manage screen time?
Brilliant Microschools differentiates between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ screen time, embracing productive and educational screen usage. The program promotes safe and appropriate internet use and prioritizes active learning over passive consumption. The school day structure also includes afternoon activities that do not involve screen time.
Is the curriculum aligned with state standards?
Our teachers can confidently teach to any required standards for ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. We use adaptive learning software (MobyMax and iReady) that aligns with all US state standards, allowing for progress tracking and targeted improvements.
How does the curriculum address other subjects required for school?
We emphasize ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Language, Coding, Health, and Art electives for GE. Lesson plans often involve interdisciplinary or project-based approaches. You may supplement the curriculum with additional sessions through our tutoring division, which offers a discount for enrolled students.
What is the process for transitioning back to public school?
Requirements vary by state and grade level. Check https://hslda.org/legal for details and inform us of any support needed. We can help your student prepare for any required examinations and provide guidance by contacting your school district for specific requirements.
How much notice is needed if I want to move on from BMS?
When you first join Brilliant Microschools, there is an initial three-month commitment. After that, your enrollment switches to a rolling month-to-month commitment. Payments are automatically taken on the first of each month using the card we have on file. If you decide to leave, we’ll be truly sorry to see you go, as you and your child are valued members of our community. We kindly ask that you provide at least 30 days' notice so we can smoothly settle your account. Please know that our doors will always be open if you decide to return
Are textbooks or other materials required for classes?
No textbooks are required, as all materials are available online. Please note the Essential Materials section in the ‘Your first day at BMS’ section of the handbook. Physical materials are optional for certain projects, and teachers provide digital alternatives. If a teacher believes your student would benefit from additional supplies, they will contact you directly with a recommendation. For more information about this, check out our Your First day at BMS page.
What is Brilliant Microschools' approach to handwriting and writing on paper?
Brilliant Microschools acknowledges the importance of handwriting alongside typing. Younger students will receive occasional printable worksheets to practice handwriting, while older students will handwrite paragraphs or essays. Teachers monitor progress through screenshots or photos of the handwritten work. Some teachers recommend using graphic tablets for digital writing and note-taking.
What is the homework structure during the independent study period?
The GE program includes at least 1 hour of independent work in the afternoon, which may consist of specific tasks, reading, projects, or group work. Assignments are typically posted in a virtual classroom, such as Toddle. Teachers can adjust the workload according to the student's needs and stamina.
Brilliant Microschool utilizes a diverse assessment regimen, including iReady for official assessments. We can provide specific assessments, grades, or transcripts upon request. For more information, please review our Instructional Arcs.
What to do if my child needs help with homework?
If your child needs help with homework, the best way to reach out to the teacher is by messaging them directly through Toddle. You can also contact them via their email, which will be included in your child's student timetable. Your child's teacher will also be happy to assist with any homework questions during the next day of class. Are students tested, graded, and provided with transcripts?
How can I communicate directly with my child's teacher?
You can reach out to your teacher through Toddle or via their personal email address, which will be shared in your Student Timetable closer to the first day of school. However, we prefer that you use Toddle, as it allows the school to be part of the conversation.
How do I access Toddle to check my child's progress and grades?
To get started with Toddle Family, log in to your child's Toddle Student account via the Clever portal. You’ll then receive an invite code by email to sign up for Toddle Family. For more details, see the Toddle section in the handbook. Once signed in, you can message your child’s teacher for updates, track assignments, check attendance, and review progress reports. If you’d like to schedule a meeting with the teacher, contact parent support, and we’ll help you.

Our career counseling program helps students explore their interests, identify potential career paths, and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their chosen fields. We are committed to supporting our students as they transition to higher education or pursue their career aspirations.
Can my child attend college after completing the program, and what college preparation support is available?
We understand that attending college is a significant goal for high school students. Brilliant Microschool provides a rigorous, high-quality education accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), ensuring that our diploma is recognized by colleges. For more information on graduation and college preparation, please contact your teacher or Parent Support, who can connect you with an advisor. You can also review our graduation requirements, and please reach out with any additional questions.
How does Brilliant Microschools address socialization and interaction among students in the online environment?
To promote socialization and interaction among students, we encourage parent-hosted after-school meetups. These meetups provide opportunities for students to connect with their peers, participate in group activities, and build lasting friendships outside the online classroom.
What opportunities for social interaction do you offer students?
Even though we are not a brick-and-mortar school, we still strive to provide as many opportunities for socialization as possible. We offer a variety of activities throughout the school year, such as our annual talent show, pep rallies, showcases, and art exhibits, where students can get involved and showcase their talents and interests. Additionally, we organize daily "Friendship Fiestas" and a range of clubs and electives which are events where students can connect with their classmates and make new friends outside of their usual circles.
For those interested in face-to-face interactions, we also schedule field trips across the country, providing opportunities for parents and students to meet up and enjoy fun activities together. Furthermore, our Facebook group allows parents to connect with others who are home-schooling in their area and organize meetups of their own. Community is at the heart of what we do, to see more about this check the Our Community if you have any other ideas for how we can connect, please let us know!
How do I sign up for electives (General Education)?
Elective classes typically start in mid-September each academic year. However, students can join or opt-out throughout the year. Once enrolled, your elective classes will appear in your Student Timetable and Student Information System. GE students have access to Art, Spanish, Health, and Coding electives. Classes, led by professional Brilliant Grades tutors, meet once per week in a separate Zoom room, and you can sign up for up to 2 electives at no additional cost.
If you haven’t chosen your electives yet, you can do so after being prompted by our School Administration team. Simply visit your Student Information System and select your electives accordingly. These classes are 1 hour long and take place before or after your regular classes. More details will be provided by our School Administration team.
How are different ability levels accommodated in the classroom?
Our mastery-based classrooms are designed to accommodate diverse abilities and ages. Tasks and assessments challenge each student according to their needs and skills. Our learning model allows students to work at their own pace, fostering faster progress and better knowledge retention. This approach benefits all students, as it mirrors real-life situations where individuals have varying ability levels.
How do Brilliant Microschools handle special education needs and accommodations for students with learning disabilities?
At Brilliant Microschools, we embrace the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach, which aims to create accessible and flexible learning environments that cater to the needs of all students. While we request copies of any student IEPs and consider them, we may not implement them in the letter. Instead, we provide universal accommodations designed to address the majority of feasible accommodations in an online setting, making them accessible for all students.
What is the attendance policy for Brilliant Microschools?
We monitor and record attendance for state reporting purposes. Although we require a minimum of 180 days, we are flexible as long as students progress through the curriculum at the required pace. Classes can adapt to occasional absences due to their small size and personalized lesson plans. However, consistent attendance is crucial for student success, and frequent absences may indicate a lack of commitment.
Who should I inform if my child is sick or will be absent, and what is the school's policy on breaks and absences?
We understand that sickness happens, and first and foremost, we wish your child a speedy recovery. The first point of contact should always be your child's teacher, who you can message through Toddle. If you're unable to reach them, you can call our main Parent Support number.
School breaks and holidays align with the US public holidays and be viewed on our school calendar, and we ask that you plan your vacations to match these breaks as much as possible. Please note that a minimum attendance of 180 days is required, and your state may have additional attendance requirements. While we offer some flexibility, maintaining good attendance is crucial for your child’s success.
How are classes managed if a teacher is sick?
If a teacher is sick, they will communicate their absence and reschedule the missed hours. For longer absences, a suitable substitute teacher will be provided.
What happens if a student leaves our school after their 3-month commitment?
While most students stay for one or more academic years, some may leave due to changes in plans, travel, or transitioning to traditional schools. These situations rarely disrupt the classroom, and new students may enroll throughout the school year to fill any empty seats. Students who leave before the end of an academic year will receive term reports but cannot receive an accredited transcript. And just as a reminder, we require 30 days' notice so we can smoothly settle your account
What is the parent's role in Brilliant Microschools?
Parents should provide support outside of class hours, ask about their child's learning, and ensure they complete assigned work. While teachers facilitate active learning in the classroom, parents should encourage learning at home.
How can I monitor my student's progress?
Teachers provide weekly feedback via email and Toddle, with options for dedicated audio or video feedback. For serious discussions, a 1:1 meeting can be arranged between the parent and the teacher.
How can I communicate with the Parent Support team and my child's teacher?

Billing occurs every 1st of the month and is all-inclusive, accounting for electives and holidays.
We require 30 days' notice so we can smoothly settle your account.
Can my child join Brilliant Microschools part-time or as a supplement to their current schooling?
Currently, we do not offer part-time enrollment at Brilliant Grades. However, we are considering the possibility of providing part-time options in the future.
Are there any additional resources, such as tutoring or support services, available for students who require extra help?
Yes, students who require extra help have access to our tutoring division at a discounted rate. Our tutoring services are designed to provide personalized support and guidance for students who need additional assistance outside of the regular classroom.
Do I need to unenroll my child from their previous school, and if so, how do I do that?
Yes, you will need to unenroll your child from their previous school. The process for doing this can vary depending on the school and district, so it’s best to contact the school directly to ask about their specific procedure. Typically, you may need to submit a formal withdrawal form or letter. If you need any help with this process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help!
What should I do if my child is experiencing tech issues?
Tech issues can stem from various causes. The first step is to ensure that your device, Wi-Fi connection, or software isn’t the problem. It's always a good idea to troubleshoot before class or even over the weekend.
If the issue is more about your child’s comfort with technology—such as navigating basic functions—please reach out to Parent Support and request a student onboarding meeting. We can spend 20-25 minutes, either privately or with a small group, to go over the main functions of our apps and tools.
If you encounter issues like logging into Toddle or your school Gmail account, contact our Parent Support team right away. If the issue is affecting your child’s ability to attend class, we recommend sending a text message so we can respond immediately. For longer-term tech issues, we’ll provide advice and steps to take for a more permanent solution.
What computer or device specifications are needed for my child to attend classes effectively?
Your child must have the right device for class to attend sessions effectively. We do not recommend Chromebooks, as they are not compatible with all of our learning apps. For a laptop, we recommend at least an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a display resolution of 1080 pixels or higher. For a desktop computer, we suggest at least an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, 500GB of internal storage, and Microsoft Windows 10 or higher.
Do you have a school Facebook?
Yes, our Facebook page, Brilliant Family Circles, is exclusively for parents of our school community. We created this group to help you connect with other parents in our virtual school "off campus." It's a great resource for organizing local meetups, sharing experiences, and exchanging tips on navigating virtual learning. You can access it via the link here, or if you prefer, just let Parent Support know, and we can send an invite directly to your email.
Where can I find your Terms of Service?
You can find the terms of service on the Brilliant Microschools website under the legal section (click here to go directly to it), as well as in our parent handbook under the Respectful Learning Environment.
