Health Occupations
Recommended for Grades 11 – 12 * One Year Course * Two-Hour Block Semester 1 – 67933; Semester 2 – 67934 * 2 Credits
Prerequisite: Algebra, Biology and Chemistry, passing all with a 2.0 GPA or higher.
Students are required to drive to their clinical observations during 2nd semester. Students in any grade can access all courses. The grades listed are recommended age ranges, so students below this range should consult with their counselor prior to enrollment. Health Occupations is a 2 hour- block class designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. This course will give you an introduction to various health care professions and expose you to a variety of medical skills, medical vocabulary, and direct patient care opportunities! Students enrolled in this program will earn a CPR certification, First Aid certification, Bloodborne Pathogen training, HIPAA training, and many other industry skills that will lead you to success as a future healthcare professional. Instructional techniques include: class discussions, projects, hands-on assessments, and opportunities to attend ‘clinical placements’ within the Livingston County area during the second semester of the class. Following the completion of Health Occupations, students are encouraged to continue their academic pathway by taking EMT, or participating in the Early College Program at LCC with a pathway in either nursing or as a medical assistant. Pre-Med Science

Pre-Med Science will be a year long course offered to Juniors and Seniors at Brighton. Students taking this class are those who express an interest in pursuing a professional career in the medical field following high school. Within this course, students will first review basic medical concepts, terminology, anatomy and physiology and human-bio knowledge, and then will be challenged with complex medical scenarios, diagnoses, collaborative care communication, and competencies. This course is designed for those students who are looking to advance their anatomy, biology, and basic health care knowledge, while transitioning that foundation to the world of medicine in a hands-on, fast-paced simulated clinical setting. Satisfies VPAA and 3rd Year Science Credit.

Agricultural Science: Zoology / Botany

Agricultural Science: Zoology / Botany
This year-long, two-hour block course provides students hands-on experiential learning opportunities in plant and animal science, and is appropriate for students interested in careers in the fields of agriculture, food, and natural resources.
Botany introduces the basic principles of plant structure, function, and reproduction with projects focused on human uses of plants for food, agriculture, landscape, medicine, and ecology. Hands-on projects include greenhouse and indoor gardening, vegetable production, hydroponics, forestry, and field experiences.
Zoology introduces the principles of animal anatomy and physiology with a focus on companion animals and livestock production. Animal care, handling, and veterinary techniques are practiced while working in hands-on projects including beekeeping, aquaculture production, raising broiler chickens, veterinary skills, and field experiences.
Students in this course will improve their leadership, personal growth, and practical skills through participation in the Fowlerville FFA chapter.
Agricultural Science II

This year-long two-hour block is for 12th grade students who have successfully completed the Agricultural Science: Zoology & Botany curriculum and wish to pursue careers in the Ag, Food, and Natural Resources industries. Ag II students will earn industry certifications by taking online coursework, participate in two, 6-9 week work-based learning internships, and be heavily involved in the Fowlerville FFA chapter.
Admission to Ag II is by application completed at the end of the students' junior year.

Year 1: The course offers a structured FAA curriculum to learn all the knowledge required to pass the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam. Passing this exam is a requirement to obtain an FAA Private Pilot License, which is the first step to becoming a career pilot.
Year 2: Optional and has Limited Seats: 2nd year students will earn a Remote Pilot License to be able to fly drones professionally, complete projects to Commercial and Flight Instructor FAA level licensing, and be mentors to first year students. The knowledge obtained in this course is also applicable to any career path in aviation, such as: aircraft maintenance, airport/aviation management, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, air traffic control, avionics/computer instrumentation, dispatch, etc.
Successful completion of this course can earn free college credits through articulation and partnership agreements. Other post-secondary colleges may grant free or purchased credit hours with the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam Certificate and/or an FAA Private Pilot License.

A 1–2 year (plus one summer) program that will immerse students into the world of Cosmetology. Through 1,500 hours of instruction & practical work, students will be educated on a variety of topics that cover the study of hair, skin & nails. With a primary emphasis on hairstyling, haircutting, color theory, lightening and toning, students will also learn foundations in skincare & manicuring services.
Upon successful completion students will be eligible to take the Cosmetology State Board Examinations to gain licensure for employment in the state of Michigan.
The cost of this program includes tuition, student kit, books & state fee to register hour reporting. Students must complete orientation at Brighton Institute of Cosmetology with a parent/guardian present. This will cover all program information and will be held prior to the start of the course.

Culinary Arts & Hospitality I
The Culinary Arts and Hospitality program at Howell High School is a class available for any juniors or seniors interested in food, cooking, baking, pastries,restaurant operations, management skills, and/or the food industry in general. Students will learn about the exciting and addicting environment of the restaurant business in the student-run cafe, The Highlander Restaurant.
Culinary Arts & Hospitality II
Culinary Arts and Hospitality II is the second installment of the culinary program at Howell High School. In this class, students will have increased responsibilities and more advanced and exciting opportunities to excel in the food industry. Some of the many opportunities available are management roles, not only within the restaurant but also event management and creative design duties; menu planning, creating recipes, and ServSafe and ProStart certifications (which are nationally recognized accreditation), along with internship opportunities in the local restaurant industry. This class will help provide students with a smooth transition into their college culinary experience, and the professional industry as well.

Cybersecurity is the fastest-growing Information Technology area, and employers desperately need qualified candidates to fill exciting, cutting-edge positions. We provide an interactive, hands-on introduction to the computer hardware, software, and networking skills required to help meet the growing demand for entry-level information and communication technology (ICT) professionals. This course will enhance technical, communication, and problem-solving skills related to the study of Information Security and Information Assurance. Hands-on labs and virtual learning tools will help students develop critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills.

Advanced Cyber Security & Computer Networking

Students will continue to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches for advanced functionality. Students will configure devices to support access control lists, network address translation and application protocols such as DHCP. By the end of this course, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with advanced routing protocols in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks and will learn to resolve common issues with data link protocols. Students will also develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement a WLAN in a small-to-medium network and virtual private network (VPN) operations in a complex network. Students will also learn and apply concepts related to WAN technologies and network services required by converged applications in a complex network. This course also provides an introduction and overview of information security/assurance. This course will enhance technical, communication, problem solving and teaming skills, as they relate to the study of Information Security and Information Assurance, as well as cover a broad spectrum of pertinent IS/IA base information, including voice and data network connectivity, cryptography, intrusion detection systems, data firewalls, malicious software, information operations and warfare, and denial of service attacks, regulations, law and governance. Hands-on labs and virtual learning tools help students develop critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills. Cisco Packet Tracer simulation-based learning activities promote the exploration of network and networking security concepts and allow students to experiment with network behavior. Students will have the opportunity to work with licensed electricians, plumbers and HVAC contractors, as well as other industry professionals, to learn the basics of residential construction while exploring career opportunities in the construction trades. This class is designed to be 30% classroom learning with 70% hands-on work. All tools and equipment will be provided, including all safety PPE. Students will be required to have the proper footwear and clothing. After completing this course, graduates will have job opportunities from local contractors, businesses, unions, trade schools, and college programs in construction degrees.

This course is designed for students who are seriously considering a career in the construction trades. Students will apply the skills they are learning in Construction I to build an upscale home in the Howell community to be sold on the open market. All tools and equipment will be provided, including all safety PPE. Students will be required to have the proper footwear and clothing to work in all weather conditions.
Students will work with multiple licensed buildings, electricians, plumbers, HVAC contractors and other professionals from the trades. All participants will get a wide range of experience with all aspects of the build. After completing this course, graduates will have job opportunities from local contractors, businesses, unions, and trade schools.

This year-long program prepares students for Emergency Medical Technician certification through a rigorous hands-on approach to first aid and lifesaving techniques. The course delivery includes lectures, discussions, group work, and extensive practice with simulators and colleagues. Successful students will qualify for CPR certification, as well as the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician examination. Attendance at sessions outside of normal school hours will be required in order to meet training objectives.
This course is available for seniors who:

Are willing to receive industry specific immunizations
Are able to pass drug tests and background checks necessary for community based practice experiences

This elective will provide students an opportunity to receive State of Michigan Firefighter I & II training beginning as early as 16 years of age, heading to their state certification. Firefighter I & II is a one school-year course that blends a combination of classroom knowledge and firefighter practical skills necessary for successful completion of the State certification. Cadets will learn all aspects of firefighter training in an academy setting, complete with fire trucks and firefighting equipment in a working fire station.
Interested students must meet:
Academic criteria – must be on-track for graduation.
90% minimum attendance and 70% average classroom scores, for State of Michigan Firefighter Certification testing which includes both written and practical skills.
Commitment to one 8-hour Saturday training session each month throughout the school year.

The Aerospace Science portion of AFJROTC, Cultural and Global Awareness, will introduce students to information on global issues and how culture is important in every region of the world. The course begins with the study of the local and national culture. Then students will move around the globe to look at the cultures around the world. Leadership Education 300, Life Skills and Career Opportunities introduces students to financial principles of budgeting, managing bank accounts, buying and selling of merchandise, credit and insurance. The students will also learn about career opportunities by researching career paths in both private and public service, options and factors that affect employability. LE300 also includes exploration of college and trade school pathways. The course is rounded out by focusing on how to build a resume, research and apply for a job. AFJROTC is not a military recruitment program and has no military obligation related to this class. This class is a Leadership and Citizenship Program.
JROTC-Navy: Naval Science

The Navy JROTC (NJROTC) program consists of a four-course sequence (Naval Science 1 through Naval Science 4). The program emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics, such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation, and meteorology. Over the course of the NJROTC program, time may be spent further investigating the areas of electronics, oceanography, cyber security, and space exploration as it relates to the postsecondary opportunities available to students should they choose to pursue these fields of study. Additional effort is made to help students build the skills and behaviors necessary to be successful after high school, regardless of if their career path includes a military experience, college/university, or going directly into the workforce. This development includes a commitment to service, and a sense of personal responsibility. Students will have the opportunity to focus on career and college readiness through further development of their communication skills, further developing their self-esteem and motivation levels, and working collaboratively as a member of a team, while also improving their physical fitness.
Classroom instruction may be augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competition, field meets, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and other military training. NJROTC is not a military recruitment program and there is no military obligation related to this class. Instead the focus is on the previously described content areas and should be viewed as a leadership and citizenship program.

This course offers an introduction to state of the art manufacturing techniques by providing an integrated approach to the design, production, and testing of objects and materials. Students begin the course by mastering the basics of a machine tool process, then move to more advanced projects involving computer numerical control (CNC) machining, computer aided drafting (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). The welding portion of the course introduces students to shielding metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, cutting, and brazing. Throughout the course an emphasis on product production is maintained, and students develop skills useful in a modern manufacturing environment.

Energy Technology

The year-long, two-hour career-oriented class is designed for students to learn and apply theoretical and technical knowledge of energy and electrical systems. This program was developed with industry to ensure students gain the necessary skills to earn initial industry certification, leading to a career as a skilled worker in the energy industry. This Energy class is the first step in becoming an electrical overhead lineman, Gas technician, Alternative Energy technician or other related position in the energy industry. National Certification in “Energy Industry Fundamentals”, OSHA Ten Safety and Red Cross CPR Certification can be obtained from class. Satisfies 4th Year Math Credit and/or VPAA Credit, Online Learning Experience.
Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy: A certificate curriculum is designed to prepare a person to function as a phlebotomy technician. It will provide the knowledge, skills, and externship experience that is necessary to safely and skillfully obtain a blood specimen from a patient. Students will complete multiple blood draws on training arms, as well as live patients, including each other. Eligible students can obtain their phlebotomy certification by passing the state test and fulfilling 30 blood draws. A phlebotomist may work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, outpatient labs, physicians’ offices, or clinicals. Phlebotomy is a rewarding and in-demand career. EKG: This curriculum provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of electrocardiography (EKG). Students will learn the basic principles of cardiac electrophysiology and how to perform 12-lead EKGs, including proper electrode placement, patient preparation, and artifact recognition. Emphasis will be placed on obtaining high-quality EKG tracings and recognizing basic cardiac rhythms. Students will also learn about the ethical and legal responsibilities of an EKG technician. This course will prepare students for entry-level positions in healthcare facilities and the Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam.
Successful completion of either the health occupations class or the pre-med science class is a prerequisite or corequisite for this course.
Students must be a senior and will have some industry rotations and need their own transportation.
Livingston County Early College Programs (LCEC)
The Early College program gives students the opportunity to jumpstart their educational and career pathways while still in high school. By the end of the program, students will be walking away with a Certificate, Associate degree, MEMCA Certification, and/or college credits. By participating, students agree to an additional year of education to the traditional four-year high school track. In return, students receive free college tuition and books that are paid for by your students’ local school district; Brighton Area Schools, Fowlerville Community Schools, Hartland Consolidated Schools, Howell Public Schools, and Pinckney Community Schools. While in their senior year of high school (grade 12), students will either begin with a full college course schedule or be enrolled in several college courses, dependent upon chosen program track. They will learn how to adjust to college deadlines and calendars, advocate for themselves, and transition into a college student. In year 13, their schedule becomes full with college courses, an internship, and career opportunities. Throughout the duration of the program, students will be supported by our Early College coordinator. Program tracks that are currently offered: Automotive, Business Management, Career Ladder Nursing, College Foundation, Cyber Security, Mechatronics, Medical Assisting, and Welding and a Foundation track offering 30 general education credits. This course of study is planned to prepare the student to work in the welding industry, a high wage, highly skilled job in Michigan.
Course Content Goals:
Describe welding and machining safety precautions.
Describe the welding and machining phase of manufacturing.
Set-up oxy acetylene equipment
Demonstrate the beginning skill level of an oxyacetylene welder.
Set-up shielded metal arc welding equipment.
Describe the key variables that affect weld quality.
Demonstrate the beginning skill level of a shielded metal arc welder.
Demonstrate the beginning skill level of a plasma arc cutting operator.
Visually recognize the quality and strength of common welds.
Describe weld distortion and how to control it.
Identify the commonly used metals and know their physical properties and weldability.
Set-up gas metal arc welding equipment.
Demonstrate knowledge of shielding gasses.
Demonstrate the beginning skill level of a gas metal arc welder.
