Advanced Placement Computer Science A

Prerequisite: Successful completion of 4 semesters of high school math.
AP Computer Science A is for a student most likely going into the STEAM career path of technology/engineering/computer science. This course is equivalent to a first-semester college-level comp sci class. The course emphasizes object-oriented programming methodology, especially problem-solving and algorithm development, plus an overview of data structures and abstraction. This course requires that solutions of problems be written in the Java programming language. APCSA is mostly about the programming language Java and how to use it to develop code and solve problems. The test is based on your ability to write in and understand Java as well as some of the underlying programming concepts and mathematical concepts. If you want to major in CS or Engineering or are interested in learning to program, take this course. Many students appreciate having already taken the APCSP course. The AP exam tests students on their knowledge of Java with MCQ and hand-written FRQ.

AP Computer Science Principles is for a student interested in any career path. Studying computer science doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be a programmer. It can lead to hundreds of career choices, from business to animation or medicine to music. This course introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and explores the impacts of technology and problem-solving on our society, implementations and future use. APCSP is meant for people with limited or no experience with developing code. Topics include all aspects of computer science such as the internet, data encoding, cybersecurity, ethical computing and privacy and computer networking along with programming. The AP exam tests students with MCQ and a large project during the course to create an app.

Web Design **

Students will learn how to create and maintain websites and how to integrate graphics, sound and user interaction. Students will use HTML, Javascript, CSS, Bootstrap, and Google sites to create effective, functional websites. Students will use Adobe Creative Suite software to design logos and graphics with Illustrator and change and create images with Photoshop. Students will also be introduced to animation software. The use of design elements and principles will be used to properly communicate ideas and enhance layout of their work.
