How can the education system get students to love reading? Has the education system failed their students? Is it really more important to recognize the rhetorical choices Harper Lee made in every single chapter or is it more important to recognize that Lee underplayed the racism and that it is speculated that her novel was heavily influenced by her father's experience with racism within the judicial system in the nineteen thirties? While yes, it is important to analyze text to become better writers, we can't become better writers if we hate the material we’re reading. In this Ted Talk I’ll discuss how we've been failed by the system, how we can change the system, different reading material and give a personal anecdote on how I fell out of love for reading and fell back in love.
