The material in this guide is intended to provide students with essential information concerning Texas graduation requirements, as well as Brenham Independent School District curriculum and course descriptions. The guide also includes academic policies and procedures. Students who plan to attend college after graduation should also research and consider the requirements outlined by that institution when selecting courses. In addition to the comprehensive information in this guide, counselors will make every effort to provide students and parents with additional information concerning graduation requirements, career choices, post-secondary education, universities, technical schools, military service and financial aid. It is ultimately the responsibility of the student with the assistance of his/her parents to become familiar with the graduation programs, select the program that best meets his/her post-secondary goals and meet those related requirements. Brenham ISD reserves the right to cancel any course if pre-registration indicates insufficient enrollment to "make" the course or if a certified staff member is not available to teach the course. While every effort has been made to make the information provided in this guide as detailed and accurate as possible, there is no guarantee that it is 100% error-free, nor does it supersede established policies and rules as set forth by Brenham ISD. Contact the counseling department for questions or clarifications.
Schedule Concerns
Administrators select and hire teachers and create the master schedule based on the courses requested by students. After selecting required courses, students should choose electives and alternates carefully. Those decisions are binding. Schedules are determined by course selections; therefore, schedule changes will ONLY be made if:
Senior not enrolled in a class REQUIRED for graduation
Student scheduled for a class for which he/she already has credit
Student is scheduled into a class for which the student does not have the prerequisite
Student not enrolled in an application/audition course for which they were approved
Counselor’s scheduling error
Balancing of class sizes
Student needs to add a course to be a full time student/has an incomplete schedule
Student is cut from any extracurricular program (WITHIN THE CUT DEADLINE)
IEP/504 Committee decision
Student not scheduled in elective pathway
See Advanced/AP drop criteria below.
Advanced Course Schedule Concern
Students may request a schedule change from an advanced/AP class under the following conditions:
Within the first ten days of school.
At the end of the first six weeks, a student may exit an advanced course in which he/she is enrolled and move to another course of the same type (EX: World History Honors to World History), provided there is space available in the desired course. The student will obtain an AP/Advanced Drop Form from their current teacher. Once completed, this form is turned into the student's counselor.
After the first six week period, a student may only exit an advanced course at the end of the semester, following normal procedures.
Note: Grade points are awarded for courses at semester. If a student moves at the end of the 1st six weeks grading period, the grade transfers to the level class and to a level grade. If a student moves at the end of the semester, the semester grade will receive the advanced grade points.
Students may not enter an advanced course at midterm.
How to Handle a Schedule Concern
(Please note that if your schedule reflects those courses and alternates requested on your course selection form, YOU HAVE NO SCHEDULE CONCERNS.)
Students must complete and turn in the Schedule Concern Google Form, which is available on the Counseling Corner page, no later than 10 instructional days after the first day of class.
Until your concern is addressed, YOU MUST FOLLOW YOUR CURRENT SCHEDULE
No student is to leave a class for a schedule concern unless sent for by a counselor
Requests that are NOT turned in by the deadline stated on the form will not be honored
The following Schedule Concern Requests will not be approved:
Requests for a TEACHER change
Requests for a lunch change
Requests for an elective change
Requests to drop a course after the drop deadline
Requests to add a course after the add deadline
Requests to drop an advanced course after the drop deadline
Requests for a period change
How to Handle a Teacher Concern
Brenham ISD hires only highly qualified staff members and therefore does not allow teacher changes. If a concern with a teacher comes to our attention, our goal is to address the concern and develop a plan to help the student be successful in their current placement. Students or parents who have a concern should first contact the appropriate staff member and schedule a parent-teacher conference. The most direct route to resolving a concern is to confer directly with the person involved, whether it is a teacher, coach, sponsor, or etc. If the outcome of that meeting is not satisfactory, they may also speak to the department chair to try to resolve the concern. If the concern is still not resolved, they should request a conference with campus administration. Please note that time is required to collect relevant data on the conflict, so scheduling a conference in advance is required.
Alternate Courses
Students are not guaranteed to get their first choice electives. Alternate courses are needed as a back up choice. If you do not put an alternate choice, and are scheduled into another course, you are not allowed to change out of the elective you were put into.
