A Hip Sling is a simple project which can be used as a purse, wallet, or travel accessory.
Designers have more flexibility when creating the dimensions of the Hip Sling, so unlike the Hip Bag, this tutorial starts with simple pattern creation.
Watch this simple video which will outline the main steps and thinking you will need to go through to be successful:
You can see here that I folded a piece of paper to represent the basic shape of the bag. Remember to account for the seam allowance for the zipper (length) and final seam (width).
When you are sewing you need to be very aware of which sides are being put together.
In this example, the Good Side of the Fabric and the Good side of the Zipper are being sewn touching each other.
You can continue using your paper pattern to create a pocket on the inside or outside of your bag.
Cut your main pattern in half and then fold down 2 cm of the length so that the pocket isn't too long.
You can use your pattern to select the fabric that you want to use. You might want to use your big piece (with the zippers on it) to check to make sure that you new fabric and pattern are the correct size.
Add the outer pocket to the correct side of your bag fabric.
Remember which side will be facing out and which side will be facing in on your completed product.
Decisions that you make in these final finishing steps can significantly impact the look and function of your product.
Make a good choice about where you will put your straps so that your sling functions correctly.
Use the clips to hold your bag in place while you complete the final closure steps.
Run the zipper area and the strap area under the stitching at least twice.
This is the most exciting step of any textile project. Turn your project right-side out and push out the corners. Add any finishing features and enjoy the results of your work.
