Human beings live interconnected lives. This means that we have the opportunity to effect and witness positive changes in our local communities, whether that be in our school or with vulnerable members of our community such as the elderly, orphans and abandoned animals. At Branksome Hall we believe in the power of communities rising to support one another, for by meeting the needs within our local communities we also meet the needs of our global community. Our girls are always encouraged to Think Global, but Act Local!
This student council aims to make students feel comfortable speaking English, a necessity for successful communication in an International School, without being afraid of making mistakes and peer pressure. To achieve this aim, the team have been creating initiatives that students can engage with to exercise their English skills comfortably in and outside of class. In The Language Ambassador Program, established by the Language Proficiency Council, students nominate themselves as ‘ambassadors’ who promote the use of English in their classroom and are readily identified by their Language Ambassador badge.
The Green Narae Academy was established by our students to share their abilities with younger students who do not have access to the same resources, within our community. Each week the group holds workshops with younger students at the Jeju local center, using different methods to teach them English such as painting, singing, and role-playing. The group is currently writing and preparing a book that they will be able to donate to these students so that they can learn outside of their sessions too.
Living in harmony as a community on Jeju island requires making connections through our assets. At Branksome Hall Asia art and music (assets) are lending themselves to many different manifestations of student-initiated service activities. The needs (debits) of marginalized communities around us indicate that we have the social potential to maintain the balance and promote harmony.
One project that has developed over the years is:
“The Euolim (Harmony) Project” which supports marginalized communities on the island to experience the Arts within a range of mediums (music, art, and language). Through various current initiatives, students are empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to give back to the community. Current Initiatives and partners that fall under this project are: Muselpo children’s center, Daehwa community center (GreenNarae), Angel House, Art Murals in the Andeok Miyeon village, Jenam Children’s center, Doeksu Elementary School and Good Neighbors in Jeju-si.
The project continues to build and develop partnerships with various schools and welfare centres on the island.
The BHA Service Council is the driving force behind whole school service initiatives in line with our school mission to Shape a Better World a our Service Pillars, which are the facets of service character being developed in our community. This involves different whole school Service Actions, which they coordinate, such as fundraising, advocacy and the provision of direct support in our community.
