1. What are the teachers’ expectations for student use on a daily basis?
Students will be held responsible for their Chromebook/iPad just as they would be held responsible for any classroom material such as textbooks, calculators, tools, lab equipment, uniforms, or instruments. Each student will be required to transport his or her Chromebook in a district-provided sleeve and secure the Chromebook/iPad in a school locker with a lock when not in use.
The Chromebook/iPad will be vital to a student’s performance in the classroom and will offer access to online instructional materials and activities provided by classroom teachers. Students will use the Chromebooks/iPads to engage with the content being taught, to create and produce evidence of mastery of content and skills taught in class, and to collaborate with other students, teachers, or even experts in the field beyond the walls of the classroom. The technology is extremely powerful and presents an incredible potential for student growth and learning.
2. What happens if the district-provided case/sleeve needs to be replaced due to normal wear and tear or if it is destroyed by a student?
Students will be required to have a case/sleeve to protect the Chromebook/iPad. If they purposefully destroy the provided sleeve, they will be responsible to purchase a new one. The cost of the replacement varies by device. The student will receive a conduct referral for the destruction of school property, which will be addressed by the building administration.
3. What is the procedure for a broken or damaged Chromebook/iPad?
The district will cover maintenance and minor wear and tear typical of the normal use of the equipment, as well as small breaks and fixes included in the Technology Insurance Charge. However, failure to utilize the Chromebook sleeve or to store the Chromebook in a locker will become the financial responsibility of the student. Any damage exceeding normal wear and tear such as writing, cracked or broken screens, liquid spills, lost or stolen equipment, lost or damaged power cords, cracked cases, vandalism, negligence, or other mistreatments will be the responsibility of the student up to the replacement cost of the device.
Any damage must be reported to the school administration/School Tech Lead as soon as possible. The following procedure should be followed:
The student is to report to the School Tech Lead/teacher the issue.
The School Tech Lead/Tech Assistant will record damages and keep the Chromebook/iPad if necessary.
The student will return to class with a loaner Chromebook/iPad if necessary.
The original Chromebook/iPad will be returned to the student after repairs are made.
If a device theft is being reported, the School Tech Lead/Teacher will help the student fill out Chromebook Theft Report, which will be completed and submitted to the Administration.
5. What are the ramifications for students violating the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?
Students violating the AUP should be referred to the School Administration. Dependent upon the violation, computer system privileges may be revoked and disciplinary action and/or legal action may be taken against the student. Students will be required to sign the AUP before being issued a device.
6. What will the school do to keep students from accessing inappropriate websites?
Although students are primarily responsible for the use of the Chromebook/iPad and district-provided technology resources, the District has installed filtering software designed to protect students from obscene material, child pornography and other visual depictions deemed harmful to minors (as defined by the Children's Internet Protection Act) when accessing the Internet through the Chromebook. An authorized administrator may disable the technology protection measure if needed for bona fide research or other lawful purposes. The current Bradley County School content filter meets Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) guidelines.
7. Can students download programs or software on the Chromebook/iPad?
Students will not be permitted to download applications or programs onto the Chromebooks/iPads. This function has been disabled on the Chromebook/iPad.
8. Can students attach other devices to the Chromebook/iPad, such as a camera or another accessory?
The Chromebook/iPad is equipped with a camera. There may be the need for headphones or a microphone for particular assignments use of accessories will be at the discretion of the staff based upon the assignment and provided by the student.
9. Who owns the Chromebook/iPad?
All district-provided Chromebooks/iPads are the property of the District and the District retains all legal rights. The District and its designees have a right to confiscate, inspect, and search district-owned devices at any time as they are school district property. Your right of possession and use is limited to and conditioned upon your full and complete acceptance of the District Acceptable Use Policy. Students may not write on, tamper with, attempt to hack or “jailbreak”, place stickers on, or otherwise deface district equipment. These Chromebooks/iPads are provided by the Bradley County Schools District with the belief in your potential as a student and with the desire that you will demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and accountability for the privilege of using powerful learning tools.
10. What if the Chromebook/iPad is not turned in when it is time to return it at the end of the year?
If you do not comply with all the terms of the Agreement, including the timely return of the property, the District shall be entitled to report the matter to the School Resource Officer (SRO) as theft of school property. The SRO may come to your place of residence, or other location of the Chromebook/iPad, to take possession of the Chromebook/iPad, and/or you may be charged for the replacement of the Chromebook/iPad.
11. Can students bring their own wireless mouse?
Yes, students may bring their own wireless mouse to use with the Chromebook. The mouse is their personal responsibility.
12. Is my child's Chromebook being monitored?
Yes, Bradley County Schools has an Internet safety filter that is applied to all Chromebooks. Additionally, the district has invested in a product called Impero to assist teachers with monitoring a student's Chromebook during the school day. This tool allows teachers to see students' screens while they are working and also logs all tabs they have open at any given time during their class. The G Suite of applications also archives all emails, docs, and chats that are created by students. Access to the review of this data is only available to a select few administrators.
13. What are our children being taught about being safe online?
Bradley County Schools uses the Common Sense Media platform. Bradley County Schools focuses on digital citizenship using Common Sense Media's award-winning Digital Passport curriculum. Students will be presented with scenarios and tasks that have digital age relevancy and connect to the work they will be doing on their Chromebooks/iPads.
14. Is there a camera and can the district enable it remotely?
Yes, there is a camera on the Chromebook and it is enabled for all students. The district does not have any software that is installed to remotely control/enable cameras on the device.
15. Is my child allowed to install apps/extensions?
Apps and extensions that are approved for educational use are allowed to be installed. Teachers will communicate approved apps to students.
16. What resources do they have access to on their Chromebooks?
Students have access to the suite of Google Workspace apps. This includes email and chat (which for elementary students is restricted to internal accounts only). Additionally, students will have access to digital curriculum materials as approved by the district, the curriculum department, and/or teachers. This includes a restricted version of YouTube. The district has the ability to approve videos for use in the classroom and to flag inappropriate content if discovered.
17. Does insurance cover theft?
No, the insurance does not cover theft of the device. The device purchase price will be under most homeowners' insurance deductibles. The initial purchase price through education volume discounts. We are not tracking the devices by location. We will be spending time making sure students understand the importance of securing their devices at all times.
18. Is the Chromebook/iPad insurance fee refunded at the end of the year?
No, the fee is used to pay for the insurance over the life of the device. It is a yearly fee. This fee will be non-refundable 10 days after the issue date of the child's Chromebook.
19. I understand that Google Workspaces is Free but doesn't Google really get something out of it?

20. Should eye strain be a concern for students being on the Chromebooks/iPads for an extended amount of time?
In the classroom, students are not taught fully online. The Chromebooks/iPads will be used as an integrated tool for teachers to have students collaborate and participate in curriculum activities. This means that teachers will still be using paper and pencil, discussion, and demonstration that will not have students working on the Chromebook/iPad.
21. Is the infrastructure and hardware capable of taking on so many laptops?
Yes, Bradley County Schools has continued to work on improving the infrastructure and expanding our bandwidth capacity, including a dual 7.5 GB bandwidth upgrade this summer. The entire district will undergo a complete WIFI upgrade in 2022.
22. Would Chromebooks/iPads be available for the summer reading/homework?
We will monitor how the initiative goes this year and consider allowing students to take the devices home over the summer.
23. Can students use a personal device and not be assigned a district device?
Yes, Students can use a personal device. K-1 Students will use only iPads that support iOS 14.1 or greater. Grades 2-12 must use Windows-based or Macbook laptop or Chromebook that support Chrome version 90 or higher. Tablets and Kindle ARE NOT acceptable. All students are required to have a device with them every day. Bradley County Schools are not responsible for any damage or theft to a personal device. The Bradley County Schools Technology Department will not repair/work on any personal device.
