All About Birds

Students will learn about the different body parts of birds and how they use them to survive. Students will go on a wing walk through the meadow and around the wetland to learn about the birds found in Boston while learning about the benefits of feathers and wings for birds.

Bird Adaptations

Students will learn how birds are adapted to survive in their habitat through pictures, models, and observing birds in the wild. Following a large group discussion about adaptations, small groups will explore meadow, forest and wetland habitats while looking and listening for birds.

Fall Trees

Students will compare and collect different types of leaves on a fall walk through the woods. While describing and classifying leaves based on structure, color, and other properties, students will learn about common trees in New England and how they have adapted to winter.

Forest Ecosystem

Students will visit a forest to observe, collect, and study organisms in their natural environment. They will explore how the parts of a forest are interconnected.

Gardening

Students will become gardeners in this fun (and tasty) program. They'll make sure the garden plants are getting what they need, then investigate the life cycle of a plant. Each student will plant seeds in a cup to take home. This program is only offered June through September.

Green Building

What makes the Boston Nature Center a "green" building? Students will investigate this question during a hands-on tour of one of the greenest buildings in Boston. They will also learn how these sustainability principles are used outside during a hike to visit a green roof, solar arrays and more.

Insect Adaptations

Students will explore a meadow to investigate insect adaptations and life cycles. This program is NOT offered in November, December, January, February, or March.

Students will explore three habitats to find insects and other invertebrates and to discover the basic needs they need to survive in those habitats. This program is NOT offered in November, December, January, February, or March.

Liquids and Solids

Students will explore the structure, color and properties of liquids and solids and get an understanding of how they play into the environment.

Observations and the 5 Senses

Students will engage with the natural world using their five senses and making scientific observations. Using new skills, behaviors, and tools students will explore the world around them and participate in hands-on activities.
