Tea is Brewing - Our most popular program! (Grade 3-8)

(1 Hour version)

Experience the meeting that protested a tax… and sparked a Revolution with the Boston Tea Party! Students bring this pivotal moment in history to life by taking on the roles of Patriots and Loyalists and recreating the fiery tea tax debates of 1773 in the very hall where they took place.

Revolution is Brewing - Our new immersive role playing game! (Grade 8-12)

( 90 minutes)

Students take on the roles of British subjects across the political spectrum. Then, working in breakout groups and representing their varied interests and beliefs, participants debate the implications of the Coercive Acts, passed by Parliament in response to the Boston Tea Party of 1773. Students will explore the different interpretations of representative government, the limits of various forms of protest, and the consequences of resisting arbitrary power in the months and years leading up to American independence.

Self-Guided Visit to Old South Meeting House (All Grades)

Discover the history and beauty of Old South Meeting House with a self-guided visit. Explore the largest building in Colonial Boston and view the exhibit "Voices of Protest" on your own and at your own pace. For all ages. Free group admission for public schools in Boston. Advance reservation required.

The Revolution Starts Here! Short Stop on the Freedom Trail (All Grades)

Start or end your group visit to Boston at Old South Meeting House, where the Boston Tea Party began! After a brief, 15-minute introduction to the dramatic history of this 1729 landmark, including its beginnings as a Puritan meeting house, the meetings that led to the Boston Tea Party, and its last-minute rescue from demolition, your group can explore the museum at its own pace. Talks can be tailored to your group’s interests at time of reservation.

Phillis Wheatley

Kidnapped from Africa as a child and sold as a slave in Boston, Phillis Wheatley was the first African American to publish a book of poems in 1773, when she was only about 19 years old. In this interactive program, students will discover the remarkable life and writing of poet Phillis Wheatley, who was a full member of Old South Meeting House. Hands-on activities include small-group exploration of primary documents and artifacts, and writing with a quill pen and ink just as Phillis did!

From Meeting Place to Resting Place

If Bostonians from the 18th century were to visit the city today they would see many changes, but they would recognize both Old South Meeting House and the Granary Burying Ground. Explore these two important colonial places in the heart of downtown Boston – Follow a set of clues to learn about some of the people who attended Puritan church meetings at the Meeting House in the 18th century, then visit the Granary Burying Ground to search for gravestone symbols and see the final resting place of many famous Bostonians.

Experience the meeting that protested a tax… and sparked a Revolution with the Boston Tea Party! At historic Faneuil Hall, students are introduced to the tradition of New England town meetings. At Old South Meeting House, students bring this pivotal moment in history to life by taking on the roles of Patriots and Loyalists and recreating the fiery tea tax debates of 1773 in the very hall where they took place.

Middays at the Meeting House

Lectures and performances that explore American history and culture take place at lunchtime series on many Fridays or other weekdays from 12:15-1:00 p.m. and at other times throughout the year. High school groups are welcome to attend Middays programs that may complement their classroom learning. Special group rates available with advance group registration!
