AI in Schools

Even our youngest learners are exposed to AI on personal devices and apps. 

• At this age, students should develop an awareness of what a human is versus what a computer, robot, or AI is, and similarities and differences. 

• "Unplugged" activities with no direct AI interaction are recommended. 

• Books that feature robots are also effective to introduce the concept of AI to young learners. 

Most AI tools on the market are not intended for students younger than 13; however, many students still have access through their families' accounts or personal devices.  

• Students in these grades should understand what AI is, how it works, and the risks of AI so that they develop good practices.

• Introduce students to AI using age-appropriate tools with teacher supervision if students are directly interacting with AI.

• Teachers can also demonstrate an AI tool without students directly interacting.

• Consider incorporating simple AI guidance as a school and/or as a classroom.

Students older than 13 years of age have access to many AI tools, both on their BPS devices and on personal devices. 

• Students should be explicitly taught how to use AI tools appropriately to help their learning, in addition to the risks of AI including over-reliance and addiction.

• As students approach graduation, they need to be prepared to navigate AI in their post-secondary college and career.

• School and teacher-level guidance are imperative to promote responsible use.

• Teachers must design their assignments with AI in mind, which may range from incorporating strategies to prevent AI use to integrating AI in meaningful ways to support learning.
