"Quack" Open a Good Book

Students and their families enjoyed a night filled with literacy and games all themed around ducks! Students rotated through six stations.  In one station, students listened to Duck! Rabbit!  and made patterns with syllables and words.   In another station, students listened to Giggle, Giggle Quack, and played Sight Word Hopscotch.  In other stations, students did Mad Libs and played duck-themed sight word games.  Everyone was smiling and having fun!

Spotlight on Kindergarten

Kindergarten Subtracts

The Kindergarten Crew has started learning about subtraction, but what is subtraction?  Subtraction is when you take away from a number and get a smaller number.  The kindergarteners are learning new math vocabulary. They are learning to subtract, take away, minus, and difference.   The students are also practicing showing subtraction as taking apart.  Kindergartener partners use a ten-frame and colored counters. One partner shakes and spills the counters.  The other partner is the recorder and writes the number sentence.  For example, partner one rolls 5 red counters and 2 yellow.  Partner two writes the subtraction sentence 7 - 2 = 5.  The students also draw pictures to represent the numbers and cross out the ones taken away.  They use counting bears and mini erasers to help create subtraction sentences too. The kindergarten students are getting tons of hands-on experience with showing subtraction in fun and exciting ways.

CELEBRATIONS!

First graders celebrated the end of their nonfiction writing unit by reading their published nonfiction chapter books to their class. They did a great job using a table of contents, writing comparisons to describe, making diagrams, and writing twin sentences to teach about their topic.
